Longtime boxing writer Lance Pugmire had his media credential revoked two weeks prior to the Canelo-Crawford fight this past Saturday. Pugmire, a long fixture in boxing media having written for The Athletic and The Los Angeles Times is writing for Boxing Scene.
Pugmire’s credentials were first accepted and then revoked two weeks prior to the fight. When Boxing Scene pressed TKO about the decision to flip flop on the media credentials, a spokesperson for TKO said it was not them. One would infer that the decision came from Riyadh Season, the event’s co-promoter. Notably, Turki Al-Sheikh owns boxing magazine The Ring.
Payout Perspective:
While press conferences are no longer a necessity with media, the ability to ask questions and gain a sense of the atmosphere to convey it in the words is something that you cannot get watching at home. Couple this with Dana White going off on a reporter for bringing up the Ali Act during the Canelo-Crawford press conference and we may see subtle reminders that TKO and Riyadh Season will regulate the media from asking questions it does not want.
