On Wednesday, a bipartisan bill was introduced before Congress which would overhaul the landscape of boxing.
The bill is championed by the TKO, the parent company of the UFC and WWE. Notably, TKO CEO Ari Emanuel intimated earlier this year that TKO would be entering boxing and noted that the current version of the Ali Act was problematic.
The bill is being introduced by Congressman Brian Jack, a Republican from Georgia and Sharice Davids, a Democrat from Kansas. Davids had a brief MMA career before moving on.
The bill would add to the current Ali Act which amended the Professional Boxing Safety Act of 1996.
Per Sportico, the bill would establish “alternative professional systems” for boxers which would create “Unified Boxing Organizations” (UBOs), a name for organizations inteded to offer boxers new ways to pursue their profession.
Payout Perspective:
MPO will have more on this once we take a detailed look. It was clear that TKO would attempt to lobby efforts for legislation to amend the current existing federal law as it seeks to make an investment in boxing along with Saudi’s Turki Alalshikh. Notably, I gave my own take on how the law should be amended. Unlikely, its similar to what TKO wants out of the law.
