On Saturday night, the UFC announced that Mark Kerr would be inducted into the Pioneer Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame. Known as “The Smashing Machine” during his MMA career, his time fighting in MMA in Japan and his battles with addiction were documented in a 2002 HBO documentary.
Notably, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be playing Kerr in a 2025 film with the same name, “The Smashing Machine.” The film will debut in October 2025.
The timing seems not a coincidence. From a business perspective, Johnson is on the board at TKO and the UFC honoring Kerr would give more publicity to his story and people will want to see the film. But if you saw the 2002 documentary (I highly recommend it), he certainly deserves the honor for being one of the pioneers of the sport.
