Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy Boxing filed its response to the Devin Haney lawsuit. Garcia denies any wrongdoing and claims that Devin and his father are using the lawsuit as a way to force him into fighting him once again.
In late September, Haney filed a lawsuit against Garcia and his promoter claiming battery, fraud and unjust enrichment. Haney claimed that Garcia was unprofessional during fight week this past April and missed weight by 3.5 pounds. He also asserts a battery claim citing that Garcia tested positive for a banned substance.
Garcia has filed counterclaims for Abuse of Process and Tortious Interference with Prospective Economic Advantage. The counterclaims focus on social media posts made by Haney’s father, Bill, claiming that “Garcia is a coward for not agreeing to another bout against Davin Haney and publicly and falsely accused Garcia of being a cheater for allegedly violating the terms of a rematch that Garcia never agreed to.”

Citing these social media posts, Garcia asserts that his “valuable relationships with other professional boxers and boxing promoters have been damaged.” Garcia claims that the lawsuit was malicious and done with “reckless disregard” of the fact that the conduct with damage Garcia’s opportunities with third parties.
Payout Perspective:
Golden Boy did not file Counterclaims although Golden Boy CEO Oscar de la Hoya believes the lawsuit to be frivolous. Haney will now have the opportunity to respond to Garcia’s claims by either denying the allegations or moving the court for dismissal. The bad blood between the two parties is looking to spillover into cart and we may not see cooler heads prevail. MPO will keep you posted.
