The Sports Business Journal reports that the Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga fight which took place on the same night as UFC 306 drew 650K PPV buys and a gate of $17 million.
While the $17 million gate at the T-Mobile Arena, did not eclipse the $22 million at The Sphere, it showed that Canelo is still a top draw in the world of combat sports.
Moreover, the 650K PPV buys reflects the fact that the boxing fans were ready for Canelo on Mexican Independence Day weekend. The card featured Canelo as well as a very good undercard with Caleb Plant-Trevor McCumby being the best fight on the card. Also, Danny Garcia took on Erislandy Lara in a fight which may have been the last for Garcia. Stephen Fulton and Rolando Romero were also featured on the undercard.
The 20,312 in attendance saw Canelo dominate Berlanga on his way to a unanimous decision.
Payout Perspective:
The report PPV buys, attendance and gate were report quickly so it’s clear that the promoters were happy with the outcome. The buys raked in over $50 million in revenue for the night and the $17 million in reported gate sales show that despite the UFC working on the same evening, boxing still is wanted on Mexican Independence Day weekend. As for Canelo, it’s clear to assume he’ll be back for Cinco de Mayo weekend in Vegas and will likely draw a comparable gate.
