Golden Boy Boss posts legal letter aimed at Canelo

May 3, 2024 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The pre-fight press conference between Jaimie Mungia and Canelo Alvarez drew a lot of views. It was not due to Canelo and his opponent but with Golden Boy head Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez which led to a letter sent by Oscar’s attorneys to Canelo’s representatives.

First, De La Hoya took a shot at Canelo noting that he should put some “respect on his name” for promoting him over the years. Canelo shot back with an expletive-laced Spanish response. In the response, Canelo indicated that he was “stealing from boxers.”

“Obviously, Canelo harbors great animosity and ill-will towards Oscar (repeatedly referring to him as a “fucking asshole” and even shopping to using a derogatory slur regarding gay people to try and insult Oscar). But Canelo also knows full well that neither Oscar nor Golden Boy ever stole anything from him or anyone else. In fact, Golden Boy has paid Canelo every penny he was entitled to receive from his fights with Golden Boy, and then some. And Canelo knows it.”

The letter goes on to request that he refrain from making further references and reserves their right to sue Canelo in the future.

Canelo’s attorney had a response on the same day that the letter from Oscar’s attorney.

“Canelo said what he said," Alvarez's attorney, Gregory M. Smith, told ESPN.

“Alvarez audited Golden Boy's payments and … found that [he] was owed money. … GGG also audited Golden Boy, and found that he had also been underpaid.“https://t.co/IqiAK7tLXu

You may recall the bad blood between Canelo and Golden Boy back from 2020 when Alvarez sued DAZN and Golden Boy in attempt to get out of his contract. This was during the pandemic and Canelo sued seeking to get out of his hefty contract

While its unlikely that a lawsuit will occur out of this exchange, the bad blood between the Golden Boy promoted Mungia and Canelo provides some intrigue going into Saturday’s fight. Mungia is a huge underdog. But, the press conference provided some spark that this fight promotion lacked.
