Miljas requests attorney fees and costs from Cohen

March 15, 2023 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Attorneys for boxer Mladen Miljas have filed a motion for costs and attorneys’ fees for promoter Greg Cohen after prevailing in a jury trial last month.

The Canadian Heavyweight sued his former promoter and won a jury trial which awarded him $825,732.75. In a court filing his attorneys are asking for over $370,000 in addition to the judgment.

As the prevailing party of the lawsuit, Miljas can recover reasonable attorney fees and costs.  This includes the amount of time that he paid his lawyers as well as the costs associated with the lawsuit (i.e., filing fees, expert fees, etc.)

Of course, Cohen attorneys will oppose the motion for fees and costs with the anticipated argument that the fees are inflated and the costs were not necessary.

Payout Perspective:

This is another example of why it is hard for boxers to sue managers and promoters. With the amount of time and money needed for a case to go to trial this reflects the leverage that managers/promoters have on boxers that may be taken advantage of. We may still see an appeal by Cohen although that window is closing soon. MPO will continue to follow.
