According to a report from CNBC, WWE is looking to gambling regulators in Michigan and Colorado to seek action on its scripted matches. As one might expect, it is being met with skepticism.
The State of Colorado issued a statement on the prospects of gambling on WWE. In its release, it stated, “wagers on events with fixed or predicted outcomes or purely by chance” are strictly prohibited by state law.”
The State of Michigan also issued a statement stating that WWE must work with a state licensed gambling operator or platform provider.
CNBC reports “that WWE is working with the accounting firm (Ernst & Young) to secure scripted match results in hopes it will convince regulators there’s no chance of results leaking to the public.”
The accounting firm is the one that has worked with the Academy Awards regarding concealing the results of the winners and WWE is hoping that working with them would ensure that results would not be leaked.
Payout Perspective:
This would be a game-changer for many reasons if the WWE would be able to work with state gambling officials to be listed for wagers. Certainly things like future bets on where a wrestler will end up in a year or the over/under on an outcome may be something that people would gamble on whereas determination of matches might see less action. But, this is an avenue the WWE has yet to explore and if they are able to get regulatory compliance with a state it would be huge.
