The parties in the Oliver Luck-Vince McMahon lawsuit settled Luck’s wrongful termination lawsuit which was set to go to trial in July. The parties settled on June 16th although the announcement was not made public until Monday.
For a background on the lawsuit, you can check out the following Legal Submission’s:
A court-ordered settlement conference held earlier this month between the two parties lasted less than 10 minutes.
Notably, the WSJ report that McMahon was being investigated by the WWE board due to a hush settlement to a former employee for $3 million for an affair he had that caused the Chairman and CEO to at least temporarily step aside from his duties. He has appeared on the last two WWE television shows for some reason to at least show his presence within the company remains.
Payout Perspective:
Although there is no direct evidence it is clear that McMahon’s settlement of the case is due to the bad publicity and potential information that would be dragged out in a trial with Luck. The settlement and most of the documents in this case have been sealed and are not available for public consumption. But one might suspect that McMahon’s infidelity would go to his credibility (he paid a settlement without disclosing) as a witness. At a time when the WWE is looking to be purchased, perhaps McMahon decided to settle without having to go through a trial which would illicit bad publicity for McMahon and WWE (even though its actually the XFL that is at the heart of the case). The McMahon name is synonymous with the WWE and although Luck’s grievance is with McMahon as owner of the XFL at the time, the WWE boss cannot afford a chance of losing a big multi-million dollar case to his former commissioner.
