A South African boxer has died after a scary incident during a match in which he turned away from his opponent. Simiso Buthelezi died of internal bleeding after he was placed into an induced coma. The 24-year-old was in a 10-round World Boxing Federation All Africa Lightweight fight.
The video that has surfaced of the fight shows Buthelezi delivering a blow to his opponent which knocks him almost through the ring ropes. Prior to the knockdown Buthelezi took a jab to his jaw but did not seemed phase. While the referee separated the two boxers, Buthelezi then turns to another corner and started to box as if his opponent moved to the corner. The referee immediately stopped the fight.
Buthelezi was leading the fight on points prior to the stoppage. According to the report, his trainer stated there was nothing “untoward regards to his condition” going into the fight. A review of his death will take place by an independent medical examiner and then the results will be made known to the public.

The death is another example of the stark realities of boxing and the injuries sustained in the ring during the fight and during training. While we should not speculate on the cause of death, one might assume that this fight alone did not cause Buthlezi’s unfortunate passing, but a culmination of training over the years.
