Haney-Kambosos fight on ESPN draws 1.322M viewers

June 7, 2022 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The Devin Haney-George Kambosos, Jr. fight drew an average audience of 1.322M viewers per Nielsen via BoxingScene.com.  The peak for the fight was 1.351M viewers on ESPN Saturday night and was 3rd overall in cable ratings for the day.

Haney defeated Kambosos for the lightweight title unification in Melbourne, Australia.  A rematch clause is in place for a second fight to take place in the country at a yet to be determined date.

The telecast drew 414,000 viewers in the A18-49 demo and a 0.53 household rating.  It drew 0.32 in the A18-49 demo, 0.18 in F18-49, 0.46 in M18-49, 0.21 in A18-34, 0.11 F12-34, 0.26 M12-34, 0.39 in A25-54 and 0.40 in over 50.

The telecast on ESPN was edged out by the NHL Conference Finals and the postgame show on TNT.

Payout Perspective:

Great ratings for this fight which was promoted as a big event despite being in Australia.  Also, it occurred on a night when the UFC was the de facto lead-in to the event as well as being on a night with the NBA.  The viewership is a great sign for boxing and the fact that not every fight has to be on PPV.  Top Rank and ESPN will hope Haney-Kambosos, Jr. II will be a big return but that will depend on the placement of the event and where it may fall in the sports calendar.
