GGG-Canelo III set for September

May 24, 2022 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Gennadiy Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez have finalized the third fight in their trilogy set for September 17, 2022.

DAZN made the announcement on social media Tuesday.  The event will be on DAZN PPV.  Presumably, it will be the second DAZN PPV after Bivol-Alvarez earlier this month.

Alvarez is coming off of his second loss of his career when he lost a decision to Dmitry Bivol.  GGG earned a TKO victory over Ryota Murata this past April in Japan.

GGG-Canelo first met in September 2017 with the competitive fight ending in a draw.  Their rematch took place one year later with Canelo winning a Majority Decision.  For a variety of reasons, the third fight did not take place until now.  Since the last fight, GGG has won 4 straight.  Canelo won 7 in a row before his defeat against the light heavyweight champion.

Payout Perspective:

While we may say that this trilogy has lost luster since GGG in 2022 is not as sharp as he was 4 years ago, this fight will still be a major draw.  With any Canelo fight, there is a built-in audience and he will be motivated to return to the ring after the Bivol loss.  This may be a hand-picked bounce back for Canelo but will still do well with attendance and those buying the PPV.
