Canelo Alvarez is returning to DAZN as he will face Russian Light Heavyweight Dmitry Bivol for Bivol’s WBA title. The event will take place on the very first DAZN PPV on May 7th.
Alvarez has signed a two-fight deal with DAZN with the expectation that the next fight will occur in September. It is expected that Alvarez will defend his super middleweight title against Gennady Golovkin in their third fight.
DAZN’s inaugural PPV will be $59.99 for current subscribers and $79.99 for non-subscribers. Subscriptions to DAZN are $19.99 per month or $99 per year.
The fight will be contested at 175 pounds. Canelo first fought at this weight when he knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round in November 2019.
According to The Ring, Al Haymon and PBC attempted to keep Alvarez with a one fight deal upward of $45 million to face Jermall Charlo. It was then upped to a two-fight deal and $100 million against Charlo and David Benavidez.
Payout Perspective:
There has been a lot of discontent based on the choice to put Canelo on PPV. Similar to the UFC model, fans would have to pay a subscription fee and the PPV price. Of course, on a monthly subscription to the cost would be pretty substantial versus UFC fans paying the ESPN digital monthly fee plus the $70 price tag. Alvarez, who had sued DAZN two years prior, is coming back into the good graces of the company and will be raking in revenue for the company.
