Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports reports that Saturday’s Top Rank Boxing PPV between Terence Crawford and Shawn Porter drew 190,000 buys.
The event saw Crawford stop Porter in the 10th round of the main event in Las Vegas. The telecast was distributed through ESPN+ which requires that you subscribe to the digital platform and purchase the $79.99 PPV.
The 190,000 buys would equate to roughly $15.2 million in gross PPV revenue.
It’s not known how many new subscribers ESPN received from the event, but one would surmise that it was not a lot.
As far as whether this event was a success, its how you look at it. The event highlighted Crawford, one of the best pound for pound fighters today versus Porter who took the fight to the champion. Despite being one of the best in the sport, Crawford is not known outside the hardcore boxing fan realm and the 190,000 buys may be seen as fans checking the fight out based on the promise of a good fight (which they saw).
