Report: Canelo-Plant PPV draws 800K PPV buys

November 11, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant fight drew roughly 800,000 PPV buys in linear and digital platforms according to a source.  The event had an $18 million gate making it an event that likely grossed over $100 million.

The PPV, which priced at $79.99, via satellite and digital platforms via Showtime was one of the biggest events of the year.  The report includes only domestic PPV numbers. Notably, the Canelo-Plant fight went head-to-head with a big UFC card which took place in New York.

At (roughly) $80 per PPV, the 800,000 buys make the gross revenue alone at $64 million.  In addition, to the $18 million gate, sponsorship, merchandise, international media rights and PPV buys and other revenue streams, one can see this event drawing over $100 million.

Canelo received a reported purse of $40 million while Plant earned $10 million not including any percentage of the PPV buys.

The event reflects that the UFC did not hurt PPV buys although running on the same night.  Once again, it’s a testament to the Canelo brand and how big a following he attracts.

The news of the PPV buy rate was disseminated via a “source” but went out to multiple boxing writers.
