Canelo Alvarez gate draws $18M-$20M

November 10, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The Sports Business Journal reports that the Canelo Alvarez-Caleb Plant fight this past Saturday drew a gate of around $18-$20 million.  The fight took place at the Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with a reported attendance of 16,586.

The SBJ notes that it had talked to Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza told SBJ that it would be the highest gate of the year for any combat sports event.

Payout Perspective:

Canelo Alvarez is the pound-for-pound king of boxing and he is the draw in combat sports.  Since the demise of Conor McGregor, no one person has captivated a sport by his fights.  Not only does he draw strong interest from the Mexican and Spanish speaking fans, he is the best fighter in the world and continues to prove it.  The attendance, even with the pricey tickets, show that fans want to be part of the spectacle.
