Canelo tops fight night with $40M purse

November 7, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Canelo Alvarez defeated Caleb Plant on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Vegas to unify all belts at 168 pounds.  The fight earned him a big reported payday as the feature fighters split a $50 million fight purse.

Alvarez reportedly made $40 million and the challenger Plant earned $10 million.

In addition, Canelo is receiving Mexican TV rights, money from his numerous sponsors and upside for the PPV and gate (per John Nash).

Alvarez stopped Plant in the 11th round of their 12-round fight via KO.

Payout Perspective:

A huge payout for Canelo.  This fight was likely a PPV around 1M buys based on the hype and bad blood between the two fighters.  Canelo is the top draw in boxing and his fans all tuned in.  With the gate around a reported $20 million (but who really knows since the official report won’t be disclosed), this is a huge payday for Canelo.
