UFC Flyweight takes 2-year suspension for Meldonium

August 30, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

UFC flyweight Liliya Shakirova accepted a two-year suspension from USADA for a finding of meldonium in an out of competition test on December 5, 2020 in her native Uzbekistan.

Meldonium is a non-specified substance in the category of Hormone and Metabolic Modulators and it is prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and the UFC Prohibited List.

The 29-year-old’s last fight was an October 2020 loss to Lauren Murphy in Abu Dhabi.  Shakirova lossed to Murphy via rear naked choke at UFC 254.

Shakirova’s sanction began on December 5, 2020 and she will be unable to compete for the company for 24 months.

Meldonium has been detected in notable Eastern European athletes including former women’s tennis star Maria Sharapova and boxer Alexander Povetkin.
