Nunes out of UFC 265 after testing positive for COVID-19

July 29, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Mike Coppinger reports that Amanda Nunes has tested positive for COVID-19 and her fight with Julianna Pena is postponed from the originally scheduled date of August 7th.  The UFC will attempt to reschedule the fight.

The UFC’s Hunter Campbell informed ESPN of the cancellation of the fight for UFC 265 in Houston, Texas.  The new main event will be Derrick Lewis taking on Cyril Gane for the interim UFC Heavyweight title.

Nunes (21-7) was to defend her bantamweight title against Pena (11-4).  The challenger will now have to weight until the champ gets healthy.

Payout Perspective:

An unfortunate blow to the UFC’s next PPV. While Nunes may not draw PPV numbers like Israel Adesanya or Conor McGregor, the title fight with Pena would have provided some intrigue to the casual viewers.  Still, the headliner of Lewis fighting for the UFC title in his hometown should carry the promotion in leading up to next Saturday.
