ESPN reports that YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul will sign a deal with Showtime Sports. With only three professional fights under his belt, Paul is leaving Triller Fight Club to Showtime.
Paul’s last fight was this past April against Ben Askren. Notably, former UFC exec Nakisa Bidarian represents both Paul and Askren. Bidarian indicated to ESPN that Paul is in advanced talks “about the potential opponent, date and location.”
Paul’s deal with Triller Fight Club was more of a ‘one off’ deal, while the deal with Showtime appears to be a multi-fight contract.
Paul’s brother, Logan, is fighting Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in June and was involved in an “altercation” with Mayweather in Miami.
Payout Perspective:
The signing almost guarantees a fight down the road against Mayweather as he is still aligned with Showtime. The signing of Paul also shows that the boxing business is based on money. Something that we all knew, but this signing is explicit in that Paul does not have a traditional boxing pedigree but is now signed on with a legitimate mover in the boxing industry. I would not expect Paul to be inserted in any ‘real’ boxing matches but the name of the game is to make money.
