TMZ Sports reports that UFC and MMA legend Anderson Silva has signed to box Julio Cesar Chavez on June 19th.
Silva’s time in the UFC ended after he was released by the company in November 2020. Yet, the 45-year-old wanted to continue his career. The bout will take place on an event entitled, “Tribute to the Kings” and take place at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara Mexico and be on PPV. Also, on the card will be a special exhibition match between Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr. and Hector Camacho, Jr.
There is no word yet on the promoter and where in the U.S. this can be seen.
Payout Perspective:
This is the new trend in boxing. Older former fighters in made-for-PPV events. Many saw the tremendous amount of money that Triller’s Roy Jones, Jr.-Mike Tyson fight made last year and are clamoring to get in on the action. As in combat sports, older athletes never really retire. Look at Oscar De La Hoya and his recent announcement that he will be returning to the ring in July and Miesha Tate announcing her MMA return after retiring to be a ONE Championship executive and we see there’s no shortage of fighters willing to fight again. One of the reasons these events may be popping up is the return to some sort of normalcy after the pandemic. People are interested in getting out and/or watching events from home. These special events provide this for many fight fans.
