Another attempt at a Leon Edwards-Khamzat Chimaev fight is off once again as their showdown for March 13th is postponed due to Chimaev’s bout with COVID-19. There is no word yet if Edwards will seek another opponent for the event.
UFC President Dana White told Brett Okamoto on Thursday that the fight is off due to lingering physical effects caused by the coronavirus. He has an issue with his lungs and will be put on medication.
Chimaev first tested positive for COVID-19 in late December and still has yet to recover. Earlier in the month, Edwards tested positive for the coronavirus.
Chimaev’s manager detailed that they had to send him to the hospital in an ambulance due to his condition.
Payout Perspective:
From all of the information known to the public, it is not believed that Chimaev has an underlying condition which may cause the coronavirus to linger and hinder his lung. This is another sign that COVID-19 is serious and a healthy 26-year-old that had a promising future in the UFC is now sidelined indefinitely due to the infection. For Edwards, it is another roadblock for his return and he should stay on the card just to get a fight in and stay relevant in the division.
