Pennington announces 6-month sanction for UFC anti-doping violation

January 28, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

UFC women’s bantamweight Raquel Pennington announced on social media that she has inadvertently violated the UFC Anti-Doping Policy.  The announcement coincides with USADA’s release that she accepted a six-month sanction.

Here’s the facts. Please read. pic.twitter.com/XYmSOJ4Zs6

— Raquel Pennington (@RockyPMMA) January 28, 2021

Pennington details the circumstances concerning he violating the policy.  She notes that she had a medical condition and prescribed medications by her physician.  She did not check with USADA regarding the medications and as luck would have it, one or more of the medications were prohibited.  She notes that she cooperated with USADA and its clear her statement on social media reveals nothing but transparency.

Via USADA press release:

Pennington, 32, self-reported the use of two prohibited substances – 7-keto-DHEA and AOD-9064 – to USADA on November 17, 2020. As the result of the declaration, USADA collected an out-of-competition urine sample from Pennington, and subsequent analysis was consistent with her declared use of 7-keto-DHEA. 7-keto-DHEA (7-keto-dehydroepiandrosterone) is a non-Specified Substance in the class of Anabolic Agents and AOD-9064 is a non-Specified Substance in the class of Peptide Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances, and Mimetics. Both substances are prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and UFC Prohibited List.

Pennington’s last fight was this past June, a win over Marion Reneau.

Payout Perspective:

Clearly a case of just making a mistake and Pennington’s transparency in this situation should give her the benefit of the doubt.  One could imagine whatever medical condition she may have had, that took precedence over having to report a prescription to USADA.  Her period of ineligibility started on November 17, 2020 so she should be able to return this spring.
