Hernandez tests positive for COVID-19, Jan. 16th fight off

January 4, 2021 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The UFC has its first COVID-19 case which will delay a fight.  Anthony Hernandez announced that he tested positive and his middleweight tilt with Rodolfo Vieira is off.

Hernandez, (8-2MMA, 1-2 UFC), a former LFA Middleweight champion and Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series participant last fought this past May in a TKO loss to Kevin Holland.  The undefeated Vieira (7-0MMA, 2-0UFC) will have to wait for his bout with Hernandez unless the company attempts to rebooks Vieira.

Their fight was scheduled for January 16th on Fight Island.  A portion of that event will air on ABC as it will be the UFC’s first return to network television since 2018.

Payout Perspective:

One would expect that positive COVID-19 tests may continue through the winter as there are tremendous spikes across the global.  Hopefully, with a vaccine now being administered we will see infection rates decrease so there might be some sense of normalcy.  Yet, it would not be surprising that we see some fight shuffling in the next couple UFC cards.
