The Mohegan Tribe Athletic Department of Athletic Regulation suspended Sanford MMA coaches Henri Hooft and Greg Jones after they broke COVID-19 protocol.
The regulator body overseeing Bellator 253 fined Jason Jackson $1,000 for the breach of his coaches. The punishment came as a result of a video of them breaking quarantine and training with Jackson. Mike Mazulli indicated that the fines were directed at the coaches, not the fighter although there was an inference that the coaches would pay on behalf of Jackson.
Per MMA Junkie, it appears that the coaches did not abide by the requisite quarantine periods according to the protocols that have been put in place. Specifically, the coaches took COVID-19 tests but did not isolate themselves for 24-hours before interacting with others. Instead, they immediately trained with Jackson. The risk in doing so was that they could have tested positive and infected others around them.
Payout Perspective:
While all involved tested negative, the suspension and fine are a reflection on the need to a strict adherence to the protocol. Mazulli issued strong words to the disregard for the rules and the lack of respect for the protocol. The stern ruling shows how important following the rules is especially during the pandemic.
