Loma-Lopez draws 1.534M viewers for ESPN telecast

October 20, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Top Rank Boxing drew 1.534 million viewers on Saturday night per Nielsen Media Research via ShowBuzz Daily. The event on ESPN featured Vasily Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez with the 23-year-old coming out on top.

The event scored 626,000 viewers in the A18-49 demo (0.65 share), a 0.86 in M18-49 and 0.70 in the over 50 categories.

According to Kevin Iole, the event peaked at 2.898 million during the main event.  As Iole points out the numbers are strong considering it was on at the same time as the Alabama-Georgia game on CBS and Game 7 of the MLB ALCS between the Rays-Astros.

Payout Perspective:

Lomachenko’s last two fights aired on ESPN+ so we don’t have the ratings for those.  But, his last two fights on ESPN drew 2.013M viewers for his fight against Jose Pedraza in December 2018.  The overall telecast drew 1.865 million viewers.  His May 2018 fight against Jorge Linares drew 1.439 million viewers on ESPN.  The telecast Saturday night was promoted vastly throughout the ESPN networks and did well despite the heavy competition with college football and a game 7.  We shall see if the network continues to air Loma and Lopez on cable or if they will seek to make more by putting them on the digital platform and/or PPV.
