McGregor says he’s fighting Manny Pacquiao

September 25, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Conor McGregor proclaimed on twitter that his next fight would be a boxing match with Manny Pacquiao in the Middle East.  It appears that his tweet was true as Ariel Helwani reports that serious negotiations are going on for a fight between the two.

I was pushing hard for the season.
Multiple opponents, multiple dates offered throughout. All to take place back to back.
Then when covid hit and the talk was that I would have to wait for crowds again, I walked away from the situation. I was waiting long enough at that stage.

In a serious of tweets, McGregor disclosed that he attempted to fight in the Octagon again after his January win over Donald Cerrone.  However, his plans fell through in part due to shutdown and due to options on who to fight next.  He then indicated that he would fight Diego Sanchez in an off topic tweet.

Anyway all water under the bridge who gives a fook.
I’m boxing Manny Pacquiao next in the Middle East.

But the big news is that he is in discussions to fight Pacquiao.  McGregor’s last fight was in 2017 against Floyd Mayweather.  McGregor lost via TKO in the 10th round of a fight that Mayweather carried.

Notably, Pacquiao signed with Paradigm sports earlier in the year, the same agency that represents McGregor.  However, Yahoo! Sports reports that Pacquiao may have ended that relationship even before it began.  According to a source Pacquiao had his lawyers void the agreement with Paradigm Sports.  The same story notes that Audie Attar stating that he still has a valid contract to represent Pacquiao.  This is the story of Pacquiao.  There always to be several handlers that manage Pacquiao without one actually being the point person for his fights.

As for McGregor, he has had multiple legal issues outside of the sport with the latest coming in Corsica this month.  He’s also retired from the UFC multiple times only to resurface again.  Despite a lot of plans he’s made on twitter, McGregor has been out of action for 8 months now and there does not be anything on the horizon in the Octagon.

Payout Perspective:

Yes, a potential fight between Pacquiao and McGregor will generate a lot of money if you believe that the footprint of Mayweather-McGregor will lead to a big buy rate.  The May-Mac fight in August 2017 drew 4.3 million domestic buys second only to Pacquiao-Mayweather.  This is all about money because there’s no way that McGregor can defeat Pacquiao in a boxing match despite the former multi-division boxing champ being in his 40s.  Although a mismatch, there is no mismatch when it comes to promotion and hype like McGregor.  He was able to talk himself into a fight with Mayweather and he may get Pacquiao.
