De La Hoya expresses frustration with DAZN after Canelo lawsuit filed

September 10, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Oscar De La Hoya gave his first comments about the Canelo Alvarez lawsuit and Golden Boy’s relationship with DAZN.

Dan Rafael of BoxingScene.com interviewed Oscar de la Hoya in light of the lawsuit filed by Canelo Alvarez this past week.  De La Hoya’s comments infer that the Golden Boy head may be setting his sites on a lawsuit against DAZN.

One of the contentious issues that will be disputed between the parties is the opponents for Canelo. According to the lawsuit, DAZN wanted Canelo to fight a top-tier opponent in at least one of the two fights anticipated for the fighter on the online platform each year.

“My frustration is the obligation that DAZN has to its fans and to Canelo,” De La Hoya told Rafael.  De La Hoya touted Canelo is willing to fight anyone.  “Another frustration is DAZN’s obligation to live up to a contract that they signed.”  The quotes from the article are telling in that De La Hoya took the side of Canelo although the boxer has sued him and his promotion.

Golden Boy Boxing, the promoter of Canelo Alvarez has had a tumultuous relationship which is highlighted by the lawsuit filed on Tuesday.  In the lawsuit, Alvarez requested that Golden Boy find an opponent and a different broadcast partner other than DAZN so that he could fight.  As we know, that has not happened.  “I filed the lawsuit so I can get back to boxing and give my fans the show they deserve,” Alvarez said in a statement that accompanied the news of the lawsuit.

At this point in the litigation, Golden Boy and DAZN have a chance to respond to the lawsuit and may even allege claims against the fighter and each other.

Payout Perspective:

It’s clear that this lawsuit will be a messy one and you might infer from Oscar’s comments that the company will be suing DAZN for a contract breach.  You might also get the feeling that DAZN will shoot back with a lawsuit against Golden Boy.
