Corey Anderson granted UFC release, signs with Bellator

August 7, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Light heavyweight Corey Anderson has signed on with Bellator MMA.  Anderson, a former light heavyweight contender in the UFC, requested his release from the company and was granted it and immediately jumped on with Bellator.

Anderson was last in the Octagon in February when he lost to Jan Blachowicz via KO in the first round.  In a July 27th Facebook post, Anderson details the obstacles he faced in trying to recover from the loss.  “I blacked out and collapsed smashing my face on a gravel road,” Anderson wrote.  “Ended up in the ER for 5 days running numerous of test and blood work to figure out what happened.”  He cited the fact that the “commission/medics” failed to do the proper after fight check up…”  He underwent two “very painful outpatient heart procedures” but was eventually given clearance to return to fighting.

Anderson was a potential opponent for Jon Jones up until his loss to Blachowicz but it seemed as though he was never happy with the company.  It would appear that the UFC was ok to let him go as he was granted release and did not have to sit out any amount of time to sign on with Bellator.

Payout Perspective:

Probably a good move for Anderson as he is trying to win a light heavyweight championship and his path to the title may go through former UFC light heavyweight and current Bellator champ Ryan Bader.  Whether the UFC did not see potential in Anderson or he never got over the hump, Anderson’s place in the UFC just never materialized and hopefully he’ll have better luck in Bellator.  As for his claim that the commission/medics in Nevada didn’t properly help him, we’ll see if anything becomes of this.
