ESPN reports that the Nevada State Athletic Commission will look into the ending of the Max Rohskopf fight with Austin Hubbard. ESPN camera picked up the conversation between Rohskopf and his chief cornerman Robert Drysdale which shows Rohskopf asking Drysdale to stop the fight.
“Call it,” was the repeated refrain from Rohskopf to Drysdale in between rounds. Drysdale continued to instruct Rohskopf on how he would continue. However, it was clear that Rohskopf was mentally finished in his fight with Hubbard.
NSAC Inspector Charvez Foger noticed the discussion between rounds and Rohskopf told Foger that he did not want to fight any longer and the match was called. Although Drysdale stands by what he did, the commission indicated that it is considering disciplinary actions on the corner.
Payout Perspective:
The safety of the athlete is the most important thing for the commission and it appeared that Rohskopf no longer wanted to fight Hubbard. Whether physically or mentally broken, it is up to the corner to make the decision for the fighter to protect him. We’ve seen corners not willing to throw in the towel even when it is clear that the athlete is losing and taking a lot of punishment. Obviously, the corner trained the athlete and knows that there is some level of pushing they must do. Here, its clear that Rohskopf was done and the corner failed to recognize this. Whether there will be any discipline will be up the Commission.
