The Nevada Athletic Commission voted to approve the first MMA events in the state since March. As a result, UFC’s planned event for this Saturday at The Apex will be going forward.
The committee unanimously approved UFC on ESPN 9 and UFC 250 on June 6th to go forward at the UFC Apex. They also approved the UFC safety plan in response to the concerns of COVID-19. The plan, which the UFC adjusted after its 3 events in Jacksonville calls for testing of athletes and staff for coronavirus and social distancing during an event and explicit rules on self-isolation at the athlete hotel.
The commission also approved Top Rank Boxing’s request to hold events June 9 and June 11 with further plans to hold two shows per week at the MGM Grand.
The approval comes in conjunction with the state of Nevada’s move to relax restrictions due to the COVID-19 virus. Businesses in various industries were allowed to open including sporting events, concerts and theater performances without an audience.
The commission issued its own set of protocols to be followed in light of COVD-19.

Payout Perspective:
Good news for the state of Nevada and combat sports fans as there has been enough diligent social distancing and a reduction of COVD-19 cases that the state can proceed. With the easing of restrictions, there are still concerns about a second wave which should be at the forefront when Top Rank and the UFC hold their events. One thing to note from the protocols, is the lack of contact tracing and follow-up testing post-event. Obviously, there is a cost to these types of items which may be a reason we don’t see this as a standard. But, as with everything now at this time, organizations are addressing these issues as they come.
