The May 9th event for the UFC will take place in Florida according to MMA Fighting. The event, UFC 249, will be regulated by the Florida State Boxing Commission so long as it “adheres to the guidelines” during this pandemic.
MMA Fighting states that the fighters will fly into Jacksonville before traveling to a yet-to-be announced location. The UFC has yet to publicly announce the event location.
UFC 249 will feature Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight title and Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz for Cejudo’s bantamweight title.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis granted sports the designation of an “essential business” which allowed the WWE to continue to produce live events. The “essential business” designation gave the way for the UFC to go to Florida to conduct an event.
Payout Perspective:
Florida was a distinct possibility for the UFC after the state granted sports to be an “essential business” citing it vital to the economy of the state. With that being said, one can only hope that health and safety guidelines are followed and that no one contracts COVID-19 during this event. Even though the state has allowed sports to continue, it is still a risk at this point.
