ESPN reports that the third fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder will be moved to the fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This past February in Las Vegas, Fury stopped Wilder in the seventh round of their rematch. Wilder exercised his rematch clause to bring about the third fight which was slated for the week after UFC’s International Fight Week.
Bob Arum told ESPN that due to the uncertainty, they had to push the date since they could not guarantee that the venue would be open or that fans could travel to the event. The Nevada State Athletic Commission has canceled all combat sports in the state for the time being and a monthly meeting this week was canceled.
Payout Perspective:
The move makes sense considering that Arum and Al Haymon want to make sure the third fight is bigger than the first two. Without knowing what travel restrictions my happen in the future, it’s prudent to make the call now before the need to spend money on the promotion of a third fight and then the possibility of having to cancel it. Fury fans traveled from overseas for the fight and it’s not certain how travel will be for the summer. The fall will give it a time to once again promote the fight during the NFL season which can only gather momentum for the event.
