Coker cancels Bellator 241 amid concerns over COVID-19

March 13, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Bellator MMA made the decision this morning to cancel its event set for this evening at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.  Originally scheduled to be fought in an empty arena earlier this week, Scott Coker decided to call off tonight’s event.

We would like to apologize to our athletes and fans, as well as our broadcast partner DAZN, but we feel this is the best decision to be made at this time.

The UFC is still set to go forward tomorrow night from Brazil.  Dana White announced on ESPN on Wednesday that the event in Brazil will continue without fans.  The UFC will be the only live sports content available on Saturday as all other major events have been cancelled due to the Coronavirus.

Payout Perspective:

Despite the fact that Bellator may have seen a spike in viewership tonight due to the lack of events, it was the correct thing to do with the growing concern of the spread of the disease. While there were going to no fans in the arena, it made sense from a PR standpoint to postpone the event.
