Wilder invokes rematch clause, will fight Fury again

February 24, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Deontay Wilder will exercise the rematch clause in his contract with Tyson Fury and according to The Athletic’s Lance Pugmire a summer trilogy is expected.  Wilder stated that the costume he wore to the ring on Saturday night wore him down before the fight even started.

The 40-pound costume was a tribute to Black History Month.  The fighter said that the costume was too heavy and was the reason that he didn’t have his legs.

Full story coming to @TheAthleticBOX shortly: Deontay Wilder @BronzeBomber tells me he is definitely exercising his rematch clause for a summer trilogy against @Tyson_Fury, that his legs were weakened by his 45-pound costume he wore to the ring to honor Black History Month.

Wilder suffered his first defeat of his career after he was sent to the canvas in the third and sixth rounds.  He didn’t look in the fight after the first knockdown.  His corner threw in the towel in the seventh round.

According to The Guardian, Fury will receive a 60-40 split of their third fight.  Saturday night’s fight was a 50-50 split with each receiving $28M per Mike Coppinger of The Athletic.

Payout Perspective:

A pretty quick decision for Wilder who had 30 days to decide whether to fight Fury again.  One would have thought Wilder could take some time off and await the winner of a Joshua-Fury fight.  This would allow Wilder to take some time off and also negotiate better terms than a 60-40 split if Joshua were to win.  Even if Fury won, Wilder might be able to argue to receive a better split than the rematch clause.  But, Wilder is looking to avenge his loss and maybe the concern is that he would be the odd person out if Joshua-Fury were to have a close first fight and then have an immediate rematch.
