NAC bans Nicholson 4 years for failed drug test

December 23, 2019 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The Nevada Athletic Commission has suspended Alex Nicholson for 4 years for use of anabolic steroids last Wednesday at its monthly commission hearing.  Nicholson did not appear to contest or answer the Complaint filed by the commission.

Nicholson participated in a PFL contest on October 31st  when he dropped via unanimous decision.  Nicholson was paid $25,000 per the NAC.  He had voluntary submitted to a urine sample administered by the commission.  The findings from the test reflected the presence of Drostanolone, Nandrolone, Trnbolone Metabolites and a positive Testosterone to Epistesterone ration.

Drostanolone, Nandrolone, Trenbolone and Testosterone are prohibited under the 2019 WADA Prohibited list.  Nicholson’s pre-fight medical questionnaire did not indicate the use of these prohibited substances.

He was handed a 4-year suspension and fined 60% of his $25,000 purse – $15,000.  Nicholson did not appear although he later gave a statement to MMA Fighting citing that he did not take the banned substances.

Payout Perspective:

The penalty was enhanced due to the multiple banned substances in his system.  Additionally, Nicholson’s failure to attend in person or by phone to answer these charges would seem to be an extrinsic factor in doling out this heavy suspension.  Although he later denied the charges to MMA Fighting, his chance to deal with the situation was with the NAC and not through the media.  There’s no sign of an appeal by Nicholson at this point.
