Report: Prograis settles lawsuit with WBSS, set for October final

September 1, 2019 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Mike Coppinger of The Athletic reports that Regis Prograis has settled his lawsuit with the World Boxing Super Series and a fight with Josh Taylor is being set for London.

Comosa, the group behind the WBSS, reached an agreement to settle its dispute for the 140-pound Louisiana native.

Upset with Comosa failing to make escrow agreement deadlines, Prograis filed a lawsuit seeking to be freed from the contractual obligation to remain in the tournament.  The fighter’s argument that the company has had failed to compensate him with bonuses per the terms of the contract resulted in the lawsuit filed in federal court in New Jersey.

The lawsuit stated that boxers waited months to be paid in full after the quarterfinal bouts of the WBSS.

Comosa immediately sought to resolve the issue with Prograis and he is set for the WBSS final at the O2 in London against Josh Taylor.

Payout Perspective:

This is a case where Comosa realized it could not deal with long-term legal and PR issues.  Instead, it sought to resolve the manner while salvaging a fight the WBSS greatly needed.  The issue was not the purse money but the bonus money promised by the company to fighters that earned victories.  One might infer that the pay issue had to do with the company needing to obtain the revenue from the event to pay the extra bonuses.  While the WBSS is an interesting concept and has produced good fights, this may be a case where the company is over its head financially.
