New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the MMA bill into law making professional mixed martial arts legal in the state. As a result, the UFC announced a “major Pay-Per-View event at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, November 12.”

The UFC also announced another event in upstate New York to occur by the end of this year.
Via UFC press release:
UFC will be adding another live event in Upstate New York before the end of the year. The organization has pledged four events per year for the first three years after passage of the bill. The events will be held in Upstate cities such as Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, and Albany, in addition to Madison Square Garden and the Barclays Center.
Today’s bill signing and event date announcements cement mixed martial arts’ incredible future in the state of New York, and reaffirm UFC’s commitment to a market that is home to many top stars including former UFC champions Jon Jones, Chris Weidman and Rashad Evans, and countless other title contenders.
“I want to thank Governor Andrew Cuomo, Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle, Senator Joe Griffo and the many other leaders in the state of New York for legalizing and regulating the sport of mixed martial arts,” said UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta. “Our commitment to bringing incredible live events to New York starts immediately, as we’ve planned a major Pay-Per-View event at Madison Square Garden on November 12. It’s going to be a historic, monumental moment for this sport and our passionate fans when the Octagon finally arrives in New York.”
“Today marks a great day for both MMA fans and New York,” said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, Marquee Events and Operations, The Madison Square Garden Company. “We think it’s only fitting that the first UFC event is taking place at The World’s Most Famous Arena and look forward to these world-class athletes becoming part of The Garden’s storied history.”
Payout Perspective:
For those wondering, the New York State Athletic Commission, who will oversee MMA in the state, will be up to speed by September 1, 2016. Essentially, this is when the law will come into effect as explained by Jim Genia. Although no names have been pinned to the November 12 debut in New York, you can expect New York natives Jon Jones and Chris Weidman to be prime candidates for the event at Madison Square Garden. Also, Ronda Rousey is rumored to be back in the octagon around this time so that would make sense as well. Certainly, Bellator and WSOF will be working to have events in New York as well.

Big fights coming up!! Big money!! MMA taking it to the next level!!
Wouldn’t be surprised if they did Jones-Cormier for this event.
Fight Fan says
Oh boy about 8 years later lol
d says
Fight fan is just sad that this fight in November will do significantly more than anything ever put up in NY for boxing.
The Greatest says
D over 100 years of boxing and you think mma will beat that with 1 show?
The UFC has been in NY before. This isn’t anything new at all.
d says
Yeah, boxing doesn’t have the interest that mma does in NY. MMA is bigger. This ppv will do over 1m buys.

Prediction #2 for 2016 comes to pass. 3 more to go and then you will know why they call me guru.

@d, I expect the card to do 2 million + if Ronda, Conor and Jones are on it.

The UFC will never have a fight in NYC bigger than Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling, you clown.
Jack Dempsey vs Luis Firpo, and of couse Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier.
Hahahaaaaaaahaaahahahaaaahah

Yet another milestone for MMA.
The sport continues its growth to the top of combat sports.
LOL at boxing fans’ insecurity.
Combo says
“The UFC will never have a fight in NYC bigger than Joe Louis vs Max Schmeling”
You don’t know that.
And yet boxing itself hasn’t had an event bigger than that. Boxing ain’t what it used to be.
But MMA keeps making progress and growing.
The Greatest says
Go ahead and tell me what the UFC has that even compares to something like Louis-Schmeling II.
Nothing.
How bout Ali-Frazier?
You don’t have an Ali or a Frazier in the UFC.
That fight is considered one of the most anticipated sporting events of all time, with an audience of over 300M viewers.
Yea but Jones-Cormier II, watch out for that barnburner.
tops E says
Yawn hahaha
d says
The weakest is not very bright. He is judging something that was touted historically as a big fight, but in no way, shape or form will generate the type of revenue that this UFC fight will do in NY. Not even if you factor for inflation.
So, then, his next attempt is to just turn it into global viewership. Again, like I said, not very bright.
d says
“The NorthEast is one of the worst demographics for MMA. This is widely known.”
You are thinking about boxing.
d says
More records going to be set for the UFC this year. More fans! More Money! More interest! The sport is blowing up!!! Boxing fans are self destructing! Most of them disappeared from this website over the past year because of all of their horrible predictions about the success of the UFC from 2015. Still a few hanging around though.
Think about it- they are going to do 3 ppvs this year that will easily do 1m+ ppv buys. They will likely come close to 2m buys for UFC 200 and they will probably have another one somewhere in there that hits a huge number as well. Records!!!!
The Greatest says
Mayweather-Cotto made more money off ppv than any UFC event did in total revenue in history.
Boxing
The Greatest says
Ali-Frazier made around $125M-$130M in total revenue with inflation, more than any UFC fight ever .
The Greatest says
PBC on NBC payouts
Spence $225K, Algieri $325K
Cunningham $225K, Glowacki $150K
Browne $100K, Kalajdzic $85K
Algieri was making $200K per fight before he made $1.5M for fighting Pacquiao. He made $500K for his fight against Khan.
Combo says
The only thing insecure boxing fans can hold on to are old records that boxing can’t even match anymore.
How much boxers make is irrelevant. It doesn’t change the fact that the UFC crushes boxing in yearly PPV ‘s.
And the UFC keeps growing.
Boxing ain’t what it used to be.
fight fan says
Yeah because they have like 12 PPV’s a year lol, basic math of course they’re gonna sell more when they have more. Boxing doesn’t have to put all of its fights on a PPV and have 8/12 be a crap card lol. 4.4 million tells you everything anyone needs to know. Boxing holds the top 3 PPV’s ever.

False. Take the top 3, top 5, top whatever and match them up with the top boxing puts up this year and the UFC is STILL likely to double them. You guys are going to be really scrambling for excuses by the end of the year.
Also, when boxing does more ppvs like they did last year, they actually usually do less buys. You can do math can’t you? That sounds like subtraction though to me. Hahahahaha.

Is this supposed to be impressive? UFC on FOX payouts are higher.
The Greatest says
No one on the PBC card is a major star or really a star at all. Spence is going to be one and this is his first real legitimate test, so its a big fight.
But i picked a random UFC card. UFC 187.
Algieri and Spence made more than everyone on the card besides Weidman and Anthony Johnson, and thats including Cormier.
UFC 191, Spence and Algieri made more than everyone on that card
The Greatest says
By the way. Weidman made less money than Algieri on the UFC 194 card.
d says
You lie every time you post something. Why do you lie so frequently.
Weidman made more than all of those fighters combined for his last fight including Algieri.
Cormier, Weidman and Johnson made more than all of those guys also.
UFC 191, was a low profile fight card featuring DJ and Anthony Johnson made more than all of those guys other than Algieri.
Fact checking you is beyond amusing.
d says
The last UFC on FOX had a higher payroll and needless to say the ratings will be sufficiently better than this PBC card, notably in the key demo.

Or Mayweather attracted to the future business. Boxing promotions are being run out of the US. Yeah, DLH/Schaeffer tried and failed. They don’t know the industry.
” How ufc champ rolls….lol”
Speaking on Algieri-
” If you recall from the Pacquiao/Algieri 24/7 lead-up to the fight, the New York native drove an old car and lived with his parents.”
How top ranked boxers roll. Hahahaha.
d says
Pacquaio ppv undercard pays fighters as low as $1500 for their purse. Reebok sponsorship money for prelimers is more. Hahahahaha!!!
Wil says
Mayweather promotions is actually doing quite well in boxing, very well on both PBC and Showtime. IF they get Mikey Garcia who just fled Top Rank, even more so. Mayweather isnt leaving boxing for mma, he is expanding to mma like DLH wanted to do with Affliction. The problem with Golden Boy attempting to do it is it looked like they were not in for a long term investment. Roy Jones Jr. is also promoting both boxing and mma, sometimes even on the same card. Good idea for Mayweather, if it can offer fighters an alternative to the UFC wherein they can make more money verses the promotion making money, AND allowed sponsors of their own choosing thats all the better for the fighters. Im excited about it.
d says
They aren’t doing well at all. If they were, he wouldn’t be even thinking about getting into promoting mma. He has zero ppv stars, zero big named stars, etc. He realized their is much more money in promoting mma fights also.
” Good idea for Mayweather, if it can offer fighters an alternative to the UFC wherein they can make more money verses the promotion making money, ”
That’s just it though, they won’t be making more money with him if he wants to get into promoting for more than a few months like De La Hoya. That’s what happens when people who don’t know this business attempt to jump right in and expect to make money in the short term. Look at Affliction, EliteXC, etc. The only one that really is proving some staying power since the UFC’s ppv exploded after TUF, is Bellator and even they are nowhere near what the UFC is now. They do have the right idea though, build up your brand name, don’t go crazy overpaying for big named talent, and make it a long term progression.
The point being if Mayweather gets into mma and offers fighters more, his company will fold within a few months. It has been proven that does not work with mma promotions.

The Greatest says
Algieri is not a top level fighter.
Basically Provodnikov is an exciting fighter who had a good showing against Bradley due to Bradley being a fool.
Bradley won, but people got interested in Provo, more than they should have. So Provo beats Alvarado, and gets lined up with Algieri.
Algieri wins a close fight and gets propelled to fight Pacquiao.
And of course Algieri gets dropped 6 times by Manny.
Algieri and Weidman are friends by the way and when Weidman fought Silva, Weidman made $24k, and an extra $24k for winning.

$24K was Weidmans purse.
He didn’t get millions for that fight.
Algieris biggest payday is more than Weidmans.
Also Algieri makes more money now than Weidman.
D you’re referencing something almost 3 years ago before Algieri fought Pacquiao, when he was making $100K a fight, which is still more than Mr. 24k Weidman.
Wil says
I can say this for Algieri, I have alot of respect for that kid. He was ISKA and WKA world champion in kickboxing before making the move to boxing for bigger pay days, and became a world champion by beating one of the most rugged men in the sport, was dropped twice, and eye completely closed and he dug in and outgutted Ruslan. That was a hell of a fight. Had he had a proper boxing trainer from day one, he would have had a better performance against Manny, not won, but better than the drubbing he got. Since moving to John David Jackson, he looks to be alot more comfortable.

Algieri has better boxing, kickboxing, and Algieri was a state champion wrestler, so add grappling to the mix as well.
Algieri could be a UFC champion after Spence beats him
d says
“$24K was Weidmans purse.”
He made 98k in disclosed pay, and he also made additional money according to Chris Weidman” that was very big, he moved out of his old house(yes, he owned a house prior to this unlike Algieri) and into a huge single immediately after the fight.
He didn’t get millions for that fight.”
I don’t know if he got millions, but he likely made well over 1m for that fight.
“Algieris biggest payday is more than Weidmans.”
You are delusional. So crazy, it is unreal you convince yourself of your delusions.
Weidman is worth probably over 10m right now. He’s been in 5 title fights.
“Also Algieri makes more money now than Weidman.”
No he doesn’t. Not at all. Weidman is worth 10x Algieri.
“D you’re referencing something almost 3 years ago before Algieri fought Pacquiao, when he was making $100K a fight, which is still more than Mr. 24k Weidman.”
You have the combat sports IQ of Howard Cosell.
