Showtime boxing’s Saturday night fight between Leo Santa Cruz defeated Kiko Martinez drew just 267,000 per Nielsen via Dan Rafael. The event is one of the lowest ratings in recent memory for boxing on Showtime.
The last event on Showtime featuring heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder drew 500,000 subscribers. Prior to that, a December event featuring Daniel Jacobs and Peter Quillin drew 386,000 Showtime subscribers.
Payout Perspective:
The ratings are poor despite the fact it was on at about the same time as HBO’s boxing event. Yet, the Santa Cruz fight finished at about the same time that the Crawford fight began. Notably, this past September, Santa Cruz’s last fight against Abner Mares drew 1.217 million viewers on ESPN. Showtime on Saturday night is definitely a smaller audience than ESPN, but it appears that ratings on Showtime are in a decline.

How terrible! says
But not as terrible as the UFC’s event with Arlovski last year in March: just 150,000 viewers.

Santa Cruz v. Abner Mares was a fight everyone wanted to see and the ratings showed it. It was intriguing and competitive. Santa Cruz v. Kiko Martinez was always going to be a mismatch. I’m glad Santa Cruz is able to pocket big purses to fight nobodies, but it’s not a sustainable business model and the ratings show it. As good as Santa Cruz is, he’s only fought a handful of top guys. All his other fights have been feats of can-crushing.
PBC needs to put on more competitive fights if it is going to survive. Boxing fans aren’t chumps, they aren’t going to tune in to watch garbage.
The Greatest says
Santa Cruz vs Mares peaked at 1.641M on ESPN while at the same time peaking at 453K on ESPN Deportes (a record for that channel), meaning it did 2.1M viewers.
Keep LSC on tv. He did 1.5-2M viewers on CBS like 3 and a half years ago.

Your math is not what everyone else’s is. And THIS FIGHT only averaged 267k which is very embarrassing.

Awful ratings, thats in Glory and WSOF range. Haymon needs to be more careful with this Showtime and PBC shows….dont go head to head with HBO, their cards are more rare and being that is the case, tend to be more competitive. And you cant go from fighting Mares to fighting Martinez and expect to draw viewers especially if you never advertise the fight anyway.
