The New York Times Sunday Sports Section as well as its online service has the sad account of Magomed Abdusalamov’s last fight entitled, “A Fighter’s Hour of Need.” After his fight in late November 2013, the Russian fighter was hospitalized with brain injuries but the lack of medical assistance after the event has drawn a lawsuit and scrutiny about the New York Athletic Commission.
Through interviews taken as part of the investigation as to what happened immediately after Abdusalamov’s loss to Mike Perez in a heavyweight bout that took place at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the article shows the lack of response to his injuries.
According to a recent ESPN report last week, the 33-year-old former boxer is was hospitalized with blood and bone infections that could be “life threatening.”
Abdusalamov’s family has sued the commission’s physicians, referee and inspector who handled the fight, the promoters and Madison Square Garden. The ESPN report states that he has medical bills totaling $1.7 million for just one year.
Payout Perspective:
The article is a chilling retelling of events and if you wonder about athletic regulation of combat sports events this should scare you. For those not aware Abdusalamov had to take a taxi to the hospital after he was allowed to leave the Garden. The lack of medical assistance after the fight has to be investigated and while there may have been a language barrier, one can just see the level of injury to Abdusalamov that a follow-up at the hospital should have occurred immediately.
