PBC on Spike TV draws just 315K viewers

October 19, 2015 by Jason Cruz 11 Comments

Premier Boxing Champions drew an average viewership of 315,000 on Spike TV Friday night per Sports TV Ratings.  The main event featured Andrzej Fonfara as he defeated Nathan Cleverly by unanimous decision.

Fonfara is best known for his last fight when he stopped Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.

Despite the drop of over 45% from Septembers’ PBC on Spike event, the average for PBC on Spike is at 604,000 viewers.

PBC on Spike
869,000 3/13/2015
569,000 4/24/2015
772,000 5/22/2015
446,000 6/12/2015
679,000 8/14/2015
583,000 9/11/2015
315,000 10/16/2015

A college football game between Cincinnati and BYU topped sports on cable Friday with 1.46 million viewers on ESPN between 7:55-11:28 ET per Sports TV Ratings.  PBC on Spike TV aired from 9:00-11:18pm ET.

Payout Perspective:

It’s the lowest rating for PBC on Spike TV since it started this past March.  It’s was the second televised PBC this weekend with PBC on NBC Saturday afternoon.  Of course, HBO PPV featur4ed GGG against David Lemieux.  The rating has to be disappointing for the Spike TV Friday night combat sports lineup.

Thats horrible. They have too many cards, too many networks and are making shit fights. Dont expect FS1/NBC SPorts cards to do well but Spike, ESPN and main NBC Network cards have to be big and they arent.

Here are PBC next two big slots

Spike on Nov 13th Edwin Rodriguez vs Michael Seals

ESPN Nov 25th Erislandy Lara vs Jan Zaveck

Thats horrible and they will do shit ratings again because these arent good fights.

Numbers are going down across the board, they really need to start making better fights with bigger names on these cards.

They have to give shit match ups so they can build more names with false hype and padded resumes. They can’t give you all the match ups you want off the start without any promotion then be left with no matches down the road. So they will pump out this shit an hope people follow the buns than keep coming out on the winning side. Then they will feed them to a known fighter. This is how they have to do it because boxing is so messed up. They have no brand to draw viewers and the sport itself is t getting viewers. So you have boxing fans attention being pulled across the entire boxing world and all its fighters without any way to focus that attention on a specific group. They have few fighters people care to see. So they are trying to fabricate more of them with TV deal and it is t working.

So far the UFC’s events in March and April had the worst ratings ever.

And TUF is barely on the radar.

Get back to us when the UFC has sold over 6 million PPVs.

The sooner PBC dies, the better off boxing will be…however boxing will be worse off than before PBC existed.

Nice job on suckering those investors into this though.

The next few PBCs are going to do low numbers due to the fighters on there. Fonfara-Cleverly wasnt going to bring the views, but Lara, while a excellent boxer, doesn’t EVER bring in viewers, and now they have him fighting a nobody who should be retired.

I understand that he has about 200 boxers who all need money and all need fights.
Lara is pushing for a GGG match and I think he should get it, while we we wait for Canelo-GGG.

Quillin-Jacobs should’ve been on NBC but will be on Showtime in December, go figure.

    Terrible numbers.

Almost as terrible as those of TUF.

    Chris and BS,

I agree. When you feed viewers a steady diet of shit, the way PBC has (mostly) been doing, you begin to assume that whatever fight is being lined up will be shit. This is a classic case of an otherwise good fight being ruined by a bad brand. Fonfarra-Cleverly was never going to set a viewership record, but insiders expected a good fight and fans got exactly that. But after being burned by PBC numerous times, I think fans are starting to tune out.

As for the Lara-Zaveck fight: a defensive specialist against a guy I’ve never heard of. I had to look up Zaveck’s record and the short of it is that he’s only beaten nobodies and lost to the name fighters he’s faced. He’s a club fighter from Europe who managed to get his hands on one of the many world titles floating around the sport. Even as a boxing fan, I’m not watching it because the outcome is all but assured, and the fight will be mind-numbing to watch.

Sadly, it looks like the GGG fight only did around $150k in PPV buys. That has to be a disappointment. He’s going to need a big name opponent in order to boost his numbers. I don’t know if Lara is the guy, but he could be a stepping stone to the guy.

I can’t imagine PBC being in business much longer. Their ratings have been very poor.
