Sports Media Watch reports that PBC on NBC Saturday drew a 1.6 overnight rating. The rating is down from the network’s two previous PBC primetime cards.
Although no actual viewership numbers have been posted, Television By Numbers reported that the 3 hour time block from 8-11pm on NBC drew just 1.96 million viewers and an 0.5 rating for the 18-49 demo. Boxing (in addition to The Carmichael Show) in that 3 hour block, was last in network ratings for Saturday night. Notably two college football game ran on Fox and ABC during PBC.
SMW also notes that the 1.6 overnight rating is the lowest ever for the UFC on Fox in its 16 telecasts.
Payout Perspective:
We will try to gather more specific information on the NBC ratings later this week but it appears that PBC did not have a good outing Saturday night. It did not help that there were two games at the same time. However, it also lost out to CBS in overall viewership and in the 18-49 demo which aired a rerun of Limitless and 48 hours. Sure, boxing skews older but these ratings can be seen as concerning. Perhaps it was a case of bad luck to run up against 2 football games, but this was to be the coming out party for America’s next best heavyweight – Deontay Wilder.
Wilder against a familiar name….even against an old shannon briggs would have been better than this lepaun guy…
Why not wait the extra few hours and post the actual ratings.
For one it was already known since about 12pm Sunday that the last hour of the telecast did 2.36mil viewers, so usually the peak goes up by 400k, generally, so it probably peaked around 2.6-2.8mil viewers, which is good.
It looks like it averaged around 2 million viewers. That’s about as good as can be expected for boxing or MMA with that type of matchup – i.e. a young, untested champion in a cream-puff fight against a nobody. I thought it would do worse.
Boxing and MMA will only rarely beat more mainstream sports on network TV. This wasn’t the fight that was going to do that.
Actually, MMA can barely draw 2 million viewers these days. You need to hype a fight to death to get 2 million viewers to watch two people spending half of the time attempting failed takedowns and trying to outbox each other.
The fans are just bored. After all the aggressive over-advertising, people expect to see some action but all they get is a pillow fight.
With boxing, what you see is what you get. But mma nowadays just boils down to talk talk talk and little to almost no action whatsoever.
Gus vs Cornier will probably draw a bit over 1,5 million viewers. That’s my estimation, which will probably be the best ratings the UFC can hope for under the current circumstances. I’m hoping Fedor will revive old-school MMA. If he too disappoints, I think I’ll stop caring about MMA altogether.

Division II football outdraws PBC. This is an unsustainable business. At this point the only question is when will the hedgefund pull their money.
Division III football outdraws the UFC. This is a dying company.

If the UFC keeps putting out mediocre fights, people will forget about MMA as fast as they’re forgetting about TUF.

Is that why the PBC drew almost 2 million viewers? When was the last time any UFC event drew as many viewers? UFC’s fight night in Japan had another ticket sales low and a disappointing viewership. The UFC’s PPV buys for March and April combined were worse than those of the WSOF! If it weren’t for all the promotional circus and fanboyism, the UFC wouldn’t even exist anymore.
The UFC is now involved in another lawsuit. That’s 3 lawsuits so far. Most of the news about the UFC has almost nothing to do with the sport. I think that says it all.

Reality is you can only compare network vs network and cable vs cable.
So Compare PBC on NBC to UFC on Fox and compare PBC on Spike to UFC on FS1.
Ask Jason for the numbers breakdown and see who is actually doing better, or dont cause its UFC and that wont serve your agenda.
