Yahoo! Sports reports that the official PPV buys for the May 2nd fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao drew an astronomical 4.4 million PPV buys that equates to more than $400 million in revenue. The numbers shatter the old PPV buy rate record set by Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 and the revenue record set by Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez in 2013.
The live gate for the event also drew more than $72 million which also did better than the previous record set by Mayweather-Alvarez. According to the NSAC, Mayweather-Pacquiao drew 16,219 for a gate of $72,198,500. May-Alvarez drew 16,146 for a little over $20 million.
The PPV outdid the 2.2 million PPV buys set by Mayweather-De La Hoya in 2007.
Kevin Iole’s Yahoo! article also indicates that May-Pac sold more than 46,000 closed-circuit seats in Clark County, Nevada which pushed total revenue to more than $500 million.
Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe attributed Mayweather’s star power as well as social media as well as the mainstream media push. Of course, Pacquiao’s presence probably assisted in the interest in the fight too.
Payout Perspective:
It’s clear that despite some negativity surrounding the fight did not diminish any of those wanting to purchase the PPV or watch the fight in person or closed-circuit. Social and mainstream media probably helped with the promotion of the fight but the pro-active nature of the cable and satellite distributors to push subscribers to purchase the PPV ahead of time also helped with the buy rate. The revenue records were likely considering the $100 PPV price point for HD or $90 for SD. Also, the high ticket prices and lack of comps were also factors for the record-setting gate.

Damn. That’s pretty good. (Understatement)
After the world tour I predicted Conor v Aldo would do 2mm buys.
Lately Dana’s been saying it’ll clear 1mm buys. I guess he wants to set a low bar.
I’m really curious about how that’s gonna do. I can’t wait to find out.
jjjjjj_ffffff says
damm……4.4M buys at $100 for the PPV….. UFC can’t get 4.4M viewers for UFC on Fox for free!!
jjjjjj_ffffff says
NO WAY Connor v Aldo get 2M buys!!!
UFC 100 holds the record at 1.6M buys….
Silva v Weidman 2 only did 1M buys!!
Connor v Aldo likely gets 750k buys [down side] or 1M [up side]
JF says
JF agrees with jjj_fff, Aldo is an anti-draw and Conor is not the world superstar the UFC seems to think he is. I see something like 800-900k a likely scenario.
Saldathief says
This proves that boxing, despite what some people have been saying for years, can still pull off a mega show now and then. Unfortunately the only thing the ufc is pulling is their dicks! They use to pull the fans dicks but most of them dont really watch anymore. You would think the ufc could have pulled off a nice mega fight at least once! Still waiting.
Pink Pig says
When will UFC break 1.8M buys? Boxing did it in 2002.
Logical says
Nobody does big fights like boxing does. It’s too bad the fight was a f****** dud, but it is to be expected with Mayweather’s particular style.
Dana White is an absolute grade A moron any time he tries to compare May-Pac to Aldo-McGregor, that fight will be lucky to pull more than 1 Mill and is most likely to end in the 700k – 900k range. Aldo is a draw only to hardcore MMA fans and McGregor is an unproven fighter with a highly questionable ground game (If he somehow miraculously gets past Aldo then just wait until they match him up with a decent wrestler like Mendes who will expose all his weaknesses).

Cmon Dana give us some competition. This shit isnt even a contest “We saw everything boxing did and did the opposite” LOL You sure did Donna you sure did. For the love of fuckin God. please give me one MMA fight that can do 1.5 million ppv buys on its own. NONE. UFC is tanking and Boxing is makng it look so damn easy. Could you imagine if they had been heavyweights? Sweet Lord it would have done 7 million ppv buys. CMON UFC Give us your best shot!! I’m still waiting. mayweather makes 210 MILLION. Pac 160 million!!!!! BAHAHAHAHAHA. MMA is so easy to beat its laughable but dont worry Aldo vs Mcgregor is on the horizon> BAHAHAHA shit wont crack 1 million. bet on that shit!!!! Boxing you’re so amazing. Canelo did 2.2 million views on HBO this weekend. But i’m sure everyone watching was over 60. some bulls hit card on cbs did 1.4 million viewers and NO ONE WAS ON THE CARD!!!!! Broner will fight Porter on NBC in June. Can you say 4.8 million peak. saldathief- what are you talking about “Boxing can only put on the occassional mega card”?. First off this shit was three mega cards in one night. Canelo vs GGG, Cotto, Andre Ward, Pacqiuou would all do over 1 million ppv buys. Mayweather vs GGG does 2.5 million right now and whats crazy is NO ONE knows GGG on the street. if he were up and coming and had beaten stars mayweather vs GGG would do over 4 million ppv buys also. BAHAHA. Beating mma is soo easy. seriously i thought MMA was going to “devour” boxing by now according to midget roid head rogan. MMA is for men that punch like women. FYI, this will be adjusted to 4.6 million when all the numbers are counted. shits too damn easy. MMA = easy work for the sweet science. EASY FUCKIN WORK

Even if this delusional number was real, boxing is still basically done for. Mayweather is retiring in the Fall. Maybe Broner will save the day? Oh wait, he loses to tuneup fighters and has his ppv’s scrapped. HAHAHAHA!! RIP boxing Fall 2015! HAHAHAHA!! Fagbusiness is going to self destruct!

That delusional number is real. You might be the only person who claims otherwise. And when did Broner lose a tune up fight? Are you talking about Maidana, because thats no tune up fight.

I think those numbers are probably close. As close as anything we see in this industry. No doubt the fight broke every record, but it was also boring as hell. I think it will go down as the “The Hype of the Century” rather than “The Fight of the Century” but that won’t make one bit of difference to Mayweather’s bank account.
It was good to see Lomachenko coming into his own (though I don’t know how many people watched him), and with Alvarez getting ridiculous numbers on HBO it bodes well for the future.
I’m still not convinced by Al Haymon’s bid to monopolize the industry. We’ll see how that works out.
d says
Yes, fictional numbers. Probably did in the 3-3.5m range which everyone thought it was going to do. I can’t say for sure, but it is obvious that the promoters/distributors are full of shit. They lie for all of the figures they release, now we are going by what the people involved in the promotion are claiming? Interesting. I guess we should start accepting Dana White leaked ppv numbers. By that analogy, UFC 100 did 2.6m ppv buys.
Broner’s loss to Maidana was a tune up fight. He was not supposed to lose that fight and was embarrassed badly. So badly, that he moved back down to 140lbs.
Boxing’s future is shit run over. This is a fact- their ppv business is headed for an iceberg when Mayweather/Pac retire and everyone knows it. I can’t wait to see the Gayest attempt to spin that collapse. That is why Haymon knew he had to come up with something on tv.
Pink Pig says
Ahahahahaha! The fight will likely end up with 4.6M buys when all tallies are done.

Again, now we are just accepting what promotions say on numbers. If the roles were reversed, and Dana White started making exaggerated claims, you all the trolls on here would be calling him out on his bullshit, the same should be held when boxing does it.
Yeah a collapse genius. Who are they going to replace Mayweather and Pacquaio with for their ppv’s? Broner? HAHAHA!

–No ones refuting the numbers but you. You are literally the only person shaking your head. This PPV is too big for them to lie about.
The reason no one believes White is because hes been full of shit too many times.
Whites never had a PPV of this level.
The fuckin cable companies were getting overloaded with too many ppl ordering the ppv. Think about how many ppvs didnt get ordered because of Dish and Comcast and your gonna sit there and claim 3m?
Get the fuck outta here dumbass.
I might as well sit back and claim the UFC has never hit 1m because I never counted the ppvs myself.
“Yeah a collapse genius. Who are they going to replace Mayweather and Pacquaio with for their ppv’s? Broner? ”
–Broner, Canelo, Danny Garcia, Errol Spence, Deontay Wilder, Anthony Josua, Keith Thurman, GGG,
There is plenty of stars who will carry the load.
d says
No one is presenting any statistics from any source other than people involved with the production of the show. They have every incentive to lie and are completely biased in the matter. White has been full of shit too many times but Arum, Ellerbe and Espinoza haven’t? HAHAHA! They are proven, non stop compulsive liars. They call each other out on their lies endlessly. Someone’s gotta be lying.
Yes, this was a big ppv, but boxing can not sell ppv’s consistently and that will never happen again. They can only sell a few ppvs per year that are big. When they attempted to space them out, they actually sold less. They had 7 in 2014 and had more buys in 2013 with 4.
No, the difference between the UFC numbers being released by Dave Meltzer is he uses his contacts within the cable ppv industry that are unrelated to anything directly involved with the UFC’s shows and reports what his sources tell him. What you are doing is just accepting what the promoters/distributors/managers with direct involvement in this show are claiming. They have zero objectivity.
“–Broner, Canelo, Danny Garcia, Errol Spence, Deontay Wilder, Anthony Josua, Keith Thurman, GGG,
There is plenty of stars who will carry the load.”
Carry the load?? With the exception of GGG and Canelo, none of them will ever be involved in a ppv. GGG is 33 and no one will fight him. By the time he gets a big fight he will probably be 34 or 35 and Canelo is a fraud who will lose to anyone with a jab. The future of boxing looks bleak. Haymon knew ppv was on its last leg when Mayweather retires which is why he is attempting the shift exclusively to tv which is failing miserably. The writing is on the wall.
You are a non stop retard who stalks people from site to site and is in serious need of an aggressive regiment of meds.

Matt Malloy says
Couple points:
– For the record, there is no source that releases actual final or ‘official’ PPV numbers. Even MMAPayout, while they toss around numbers, they are mostly just guestimates based on a formula. The way the industry is structured, has many different (and separate) entities collecting their sales, which aren’t even all handed over for weeks, if not longer. And even once collected months later, very few people have the actual official numbers. So it’s all speculation and guessing to a degree, especially this early. Any thing you hear now, is just promoters barking.
– That said, there’s no real reason to question the high number. The reason being is the Gate receipts. This number is much more factual. It’s reported to the state in Nevada, and cash receipts/gate can be collected very quickly, as well as attendance figures in a very timely manner (a day) We know these numbers. The $72 million reported gate on an attendance of 16,219 is staggering ($4,439 per seat). That is almost 4x what the previous record of $20 million. In summary, it’s hardly a stretch to think the ppv results almost doubled the prior record of 2.2 million buys. Come on…really…think on that. With a gate of $72m, does anyone think the PPV numbers will be lower than 3 million? 2.2 million? No. The gate is a good reflection of the ‘buzz’ with the event.
– For comparison purposes, the UFC best all time gates would appear to be in and around the $4 million to $7 million range. I think Sonnen vs Silva II is the UFC record? Somewhere in the $6.5 million gate receipt range ($450 per seat?). The UFC isn’t anywhere in the ballpark with events of this size.
– To the people trying to compare boxing and MMA. You are behaving like idiots. There are no overall winners or losers here, trying to say boxing is winning or MMA is overtaking it. Why behave like online idiots? If anything, both sides are right, but not for the reasons you state.
– Reality is this. This event was not a reflection of the state of boxing. It’s still a slowly dying sport. But that does not mean, it’s descent will be uniformly downwards. This event was more a reflection that boxing still does have legs left, in recapturing the celebrity crowd of Hollywood. Getting them to overpay for tickets, so they can be seen. Take a look around. The dozens and dozens and dozens of celebrities and names at this event. Have you ever seen ANY of them at a prior boxing event in the past year or two? No. There were very few tickets available to the public for this. All these celebrity clowns were the people dropping $5,000, $10,000 and higher for seat to this event, inflating the Gate receipts up. Not saying that’s a bad thing, but are these people really fans? No. Are they are reflection that boxing is ‘back’? Hell no.
– The other reality is that MMA does not have this celebrity driven allure right now, and can not and probably will not have the ability in the foreseeable future. But just because it doesn’t, that doesn’t reflect on whether MMA is beneath boxing. Boxing has had over a century to build up it’s sport as the ‘place to be seen’ for celebrity events like this. MMA hasn’t had that yet, in it’s 10 to 20 years. You have to be fair here. You can’t expect that of MMA, but with that, understand that despite it being a celebrity event, this boxing event was real. Real $$$$. But it’s overall place in the boxing trend, it’s an outlier.

Because no one bothered to challenge or investigate their numbers. Boxing doesn’t have the same thing as mma does with people investigating the matter. Rafael used to, but he does not anymore. I’m glad you acknowledged the difference. That is the first step in you and eradicating your retarded delusions. Too many people involved? The only people with audit rights to that fight are the heads of HBO/Showtime sports- who have lied about numbers before, Bob Arum(who has been called out by people within this promotion in the past on his endless lies about numbers, etc., Al Haymon who never speaks to the public, Floyd and Manny. That’s it. This isn’t some laundry list of people involved, you mutant.

Really? What round did Alvarez ko him? Oh yeah, three idiotic judges gave the fight to Canelo. As horrible as mma judging is, it isn’t a fraction as bad as boxing is. Canelo lost to Lara and Trout. He wins decisions because he is a star.
Yeah, those ppv numbers were really rolling in for Wilder and Klitschko’s fights. HAHAHA!!

Matt, that is not true. GSP vs Shields did a 12m gate. The gate does not always indicate how many ppv buys a fight will generate. Keep in mind that this had to do with high rolling gamblers, that is not reflective of ppv. Also, I don’t think anyone was comparing the UFC to this ppv. My point was the drastically exaggerated ppv figure they are throwing out there with zero people investigating whether or not the promotion is lying. As I pointed out, that would be the equivalent to Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta making a ppv buy claim. We already saw it basically happen when they told Iole behind closed doors the UFC 100 show did 2.6m, and the real number was 1.6m.
Also one more thing to point out- just because mma can’t produce 1 mega event like that right now or possibly even in the foreseeable future, doesn’t mean they aren’t more popular. The UFC’s numbers are much more consistent. They can throw out ppvs every month, boxing can’t.
Matt Malloy says
Thank you for pointing out that I am ‘wrong’, so please excuse me (when going off memory) for missing ONE event out of the hundreds the UFC has run. Regardless, does your correction really change my point? No. After that big GSP event, the next closest gate is the one I listed, with many others right behind. A typical ‘big gate’ for a UFC event is in that $4 to $7 million range. That GPS event was sort of an anomaly.
And yes, Gate does not equal PPV. I get that. But the gate receipts, especially one that generates around $72 million in ticket sales, is a pretty strong indicator that this ppv event had some ‘buzz’ around it and was generating a lot of heat. That was my only point when linking the two items. The four million buys seems spot on correct. Especially so when most all other indicators point that way right now too. So there’s no real reason to argue against it.
No comment on the your ‘behind closed doors’ comment. You can’t treat that as fact. Dana lies quite a bit and there’s no way to know which end is up with him. And the same goes for these PPV numbers, AS I said in my first paragraph. There is no official source documentation for any of this stuff. But the gate receipts are real, and the hype was real with this fight. It did big numbers. You are going to continue to look a bit silly trying to argue that it did less than 2 million. It most likely did do the huge four million number. Does it really matter if it was 3.6 or 4.4? No. So why keep arguing? It set a record.
Your last paragraph. You are repeating what I said. Read my comment that said…
“But just because it doesn’t, that doesn’t reflect on whether MMA is beneath boxing”.
So to repeat myself. This PPV proves nothing in regards to popularity, as there are dozens of different ways to measure that. All this boxing event did was reaffirm what we already knew, that Boxing’s history/legacy still allows it to produce these celebrity driven mega events better than MMA. Why? That’s another topic, but that’s how it is. Boxing gets the nod here. But this boxing event was an outlier. A somewhat freakish event due to a perfect storm of having the two most popular/recognized fighters for the past decades avoid each other, and then finally brought together. In my opinion, if Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture kept winning for years and years, plus ducked each other for five years, ..a super fight with them would probably hit 2 to 3 million ppv’s too.
But guess what? MMA/UFC forces top fighters to fight each other, so no long term generated buildup can occur. It doesn’t follow boxing’s format which allows dancing/glove hugging pvssies to avoid real competition. Different sports. This partly explains why MMA/UFC will probably never generate mega fights like this. You need time to build up legacies and names.
Either way, there’s not a whole lot behind FMJ and Manny, who are both in their late 30’s. The cupboard is mostly bare. When looking at things from that standpoint, once you get beyond FMJ and Manny, the story looks a lot different when discussing popularity. Many of boxing’s remaining ‘stars’ aren’t producing any significant ppv numbers or ratings better than some of the UFC top players. Some of these ‘stars’ barely hit 300k in ppv buys last year. Not really outperforming the UFC ‘stars’.
d says
You were comparing the biggest fight in boxing history and then you attempted to compare avg Vegas numbers for a ufc event. That is not a fair comparison. Nor does it validate your argument.
“And yes, Gate does not equal PPV. I get that. I agree there was plenty of buzz. I pointed out that this did over 3m buys. That would destroy anything ppv wise before. You act like I was claiming this was a low number. You have zero evidence to verify the 4.4m figure other than your opinion and the promoter’s claims. There is plenty of reason to argue against it. These guys lie. Do you have any evidence what so ever that there was 4.4m ppv buys? There is none. You are just going on the promoter/distrubutor’s word. The gate is irrelevant to the argument of whether or not this did 3 or 4m buys.
“No comment on the your ‘behind closed doors’ comment. You can’t treat that as fact. Dana lies quite a bit and there’s no way to know which end is up with him. I can’t treat what as fact? That White whispers in Iole’s ears about the numbers? Even if that weren’t true- Iole did report that. Where did those figures come from? Thin air? I pointed out that White lies, just like the boxing promoters do. That is why I said, you need to get an unbiased investigator. The UFC has Meltzer, who is there in boxing anymore? No one. Until then, these numbers have no credibility behind them. I look silly? Show me a quote where I said it did less than 2m buys? I said without question that it was going to do around 3m buys before the fight took place and then afterwards I said it probably did over 3m, but not 4m. It does make a difference if it did 3 or 4m in terms of this conversation where people are debating it. Why do any of these statistics matter based on that angle?
I agree with most of what you said about your latter point. It seemed in your previous post you were implying that boxing is more popular because it has been around longer. All I was stating was that it isn’t more popular. The UFC can sell fights with multiple fighters unlike boxing which basically has 2 guys who can sell a ppv and they can only do around 4 solid ppvs per year, where the UFC can do upwards of 10 in a big year. Most people don’t realize that if the UFC decided to only have 4 ppvs per year, loaded the cards and promoted them to death like boxing did, they would be hitting around a million buys every ppv like boxing. I think you would agree with that.
Matt Malloy says
I didn’t compare events. Please read what I actually said. I called this boxing event an ‘outlier’. One that is not typical. Note that. And my only purpose in bringing up the typical UFC gate receipts, was to show just HOW big this boxing match was. To put it in perspective, just how huge this gate was. And a gate this big…is most likely going to have big PPV numbers with it. The two mostly correlate.
I think you need what people write, a bit closer. You are arguing, solely for the point of arguing. Quit being so defensive.
So with that, if you feel this …” I said it probably did over 3m, but not 4m”…then what the hell are you arguing about? Who cares if it did 3.8 or 4.4 million? Not even FMJ promoters have actually given an official number. Most of what I have read is purely estimates, where they think it will come in at. And right now, they are ESTIMATING at or around 4.4 million. Who cares about this difference. It’s still a massive number either way, best of all time.
I wasn’t saying boxing is more popular because it’s been around longer, just that it’s legacy/history allows it to generate more of these celebrity, mega fights. That plus this event was perfectly set up, as boxing promoters allowed FMJ to duck Manny for years and years. Perfect storm of hype,
I don’t know if the UFC is more popular, because there is no official way to compare the two sports, under one measurement of popularity. TV ratings? Gross ppv buys? Top selling event? No of events? Dozens of ways to do this. Who knows. You have to define the rules of engagement (what stats to use when comparing), if you actually want to try and have this discussion.
d says
You should go back and read what I SAID. You were claiming what I said was false. I only responded to your statements after you commented on mine. Of course FMJ hasn’t given an official number. The numbers they are throwing out there are exaggerated. Again, the only people making these claims are people who produced the event with everything to gain from lying.
So to be clear, was it a huge event? Absolutely. But are they exaggerating the numbers? Absolutely.
I wouldn’t even be discussing this in the first place if it weren’t for these retards constantly trolling this site.
The Greatest says
Couple things here.
FMJ never ducked Manny. If you are educated in the subject, which I am, you would see that there really wasn’t any ducking from the fighters but more so on Arums part of screwing up negotiations, with the drug testing and all that WHICH Freddie Roach has came out and said that all that was their fault for.
To D claiming their is no evidence for 4.4m buys, there is also no evidence for what you are claiming as well and realistically you are just pulling numbers out of thin air.
Whats happening is that you are so anti-boxing that you cant fathom such a successful ppv.
Your theory that this didn’t hit 4.4m is because Dana White lies.
That is a terrible theory.

The word educated in relation to your position on the matter are polar opposites. You are a delusional retard.
Yes, there is evidence of what I am claiming. The source given has zero reputation and is notorious for fabricating numbers. If Dana White made a statement that seemed clearly exaggerated on ppv numbers, everyone(myself included wouldn’t take him seriously for a minute), but since the majority of idiots on here like you are boxing trolls, the promoter’s numbers are accepted for boxing ppvs. It is beyond idiotic and hypocritical. My numbers aren’t being pulled out of thin air also, that was what nearly any objective analyst was assuming would be the range prior to the fight.
You don’t even know what the word theory means, stop posting, you just make yourself look like more of an idiot every time you comment here.

By the way retard, here is a great example of why Kevin Iole is a complete moron and anyone taking him at his word is beyond an idiot: Kevin Iole earlier today reported that Corey Hill died. Since Iole has zero journalistic integrity, and didn’t do any research similar to the way he did none with Gayweather’s ppv numbers, he didn’t realize Hill hasn’t died yet. He is gravely ill, but to make a mistake like that shows what kind of idiot Iole is. All he would have to do to confirm this is contact close family or the coroner. Haha.

“d”
You need to let it go. You are starting to sound a way bit over the top, in your fanatical hatred of boxing.
1. I didn’t ‘claim you were false’. What type of nonsense statement is that? I originally said this…. “there’s no real reason to question the high number”. And I firmly believe that. If FMJ’s promoters & team were looking to exaggerate, all they had to do was top 2.2 million ppv buys, and they had the record. Anything over 2.2 is #1 of all time. So if anything, there’s little reason to keep lying or exaggerating. Reality is, most all indirect measures (gate receipts, pricing, etc..) point towards a massive ppv buy rate, as well as other independent sources. And whether the final number turns out to be 3.8 million or 4.4 million, ….IT DOESN’T MATTER.
2. There’s no reason for you to be making some argument about how they exaggerate. You say “absolutely’? Sorry, you have no proof to counter that, other than vague comment about past behavior. Either way again, you are behaving like FMJ’s team murdered someone. They didn’t. They just offered up some numbers on where they think it will come in. How can you give them shit for that, when Dana White lies every other time he opens his mouth? If you want to crucify someone, start there. So anyways…FMJ’s team got the record. They deserve some props for a well marketed business/fight campaign.
3 Agree on Kevin Lole.

You are clearly implying that what I said is false. You just analyzed why you believe that. I don’t understand why that is confusing to you.
There is every reason to claim they are lying. The numbers are drastically higher than expectation and they came up with a number that would be nearly insane to accomplish. All of the individuals involve have a blatant history of fabricating numbers which leads one to assume they are lying. If you don’t want to accept that, fine. Just accept promoter’s numbers when they release them from here on out when they seem inflated. But that doesn’t mean I”m wrong.
Did I not say White lied frequently? My entire argument included his lies too. When Dana lies, I would call him out on it as well. Would I act as critical towards him on here? No. Because there are already 5000 boxing troll accounts who will do that the instant he says something. This place is a convention for insecure boxing fans.

i am a fan of both boxing and ufc, this was the last huge fight boxing will h ave for many many years if not ever.
ufc also is running to many cards and ppvs , spending 65 every month for a watered down ufc card is ridicoulous.
