ESPN reports that Chael Sonnen has failed a random drug test as it was discovered that he tested positive for two banned substances. The drug test was confirmed to MMA Junkie by Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Bob Bennett.
The random drug test was taken last month by the NSAC.
Via ESPN:
The substances Sonnen tested positive for are classified as antiestrogenic. Anastrozole is used to treat early stages of breast cancer. Clomiphene is used in cases of female infertility.
ESPN states that Sonnen will not file appeal to this finding. Regardless, Sonnen is out of his UFC 175 bout with Vitor Belfort. Originally, Sonnen was to face Wanderlei Silva but was then replaced after Silva did not comply with a random drug test. For that matter, Belfort has his own issues as he will need to appear before the NSAC on June 17th to discuss his own drug testing issues. Without an opponent, we will see if Belfort will follow through with the hearing or pull out altogether.
Payout Perspective:
Stay tuned for more as Sonnen will likely address this finding on UFC Tonight on FS1. The finding is not good for the UFC’s overall image. Even though it supported a TRT ban, we see that one of the bigger fights that was to take place at UFC 175 is essentially off as the first two fighters (Wandy-Sonnen) are now out and the replacement has his own testing issues. We will see what Sonnen has to say tonight and what will he do to repair his image.

Saldathief,
From Dave Meltzer:
“Sonnen tested positive from Clomiphene and Anastrozole, two anti-estrogen agents that are used by bodybuilders when coming off steroids, which, essentially, dropping TRT is doing.
The drugs are used to get the body to produce natural testosterone and also to avoid female sex characteristics that come from a testosterone crash.”
saldathief says
Thanks Jeremy
tops E says
So what other upcoming fights are there? Hahaha
Sam says
Nothing.
There is nothing coming up.
$450 million + due in 12 months. Culinary Academy looking to drop a bomb soon… 🙂

This is the second time he has tested positive for a banned substance — makes his comments directed at Wanderlei even more hilarious. So i guess now the UFC needs to add a small print to their logo: UFC ‘Now with more vitamin S’

First, From all accounts, Chael has a real condition. He was also forced onto these drugs because the commission approved then banned testosterone. What further damage did the legal TRT cause? Maybe he could have rebounded but not after a few years of constant legal testosterone use. Also this is much different tha. Wandy. Wandy has no condition and ran from tests. Since he isn’t on TRT or have a condition. One can only assume he is on hardcore roids to cheat rather than treat a condition.
saldathief says
TRT is total bullshit excuse to use steroids! Dont make excuses for this steroid user who ruined his system and now has to use drugs to be normal. If you have a legit testosterone problem you shouldn’t be in pro sports!!! or be a fighter. Go relax at home and let the young and healthy guys fight! All these MMA fighters with trt have abused their bodies and are no paying the price with low or no T. please go away and stop corrupting the sport with your drugs and trt bullshit!
Diego says
If Sonnen has a condition odds are he gave it to himself by abusing steroids. Hypogonadism is extremely rare among the general population and is usually diagnosed at puberty, yet somehow it is highly prevalent among MMA athletes and diagnosed in adulthood. That is suspicious.

Sam,
Thanks for the link. That report suggests that Zuffa’s EBITDA was ~$110M in 2012 and Moody’s expects that it could get to ~$170 – $200M without distributions to the owners or new acquisitions.
tops E says
Good article sam the best part. Is when they classified zuffa as “Small”Hahaha…why didnt Dw go ballistic with this statement haha
tops E says
Stated not classified i mean
Sam says
All the same, one of the biggest reasons for EBITDA’s popularity is that it shows more profit than just operating profits. It has become the metric of choice for highly leveraged companies in capital-intensive industries such as cable and telecommunications, where bona fide profits are sometimes hard to come by. A company can make its financial picture more attractive by touting its EBITDA performance, shifting investors’ attention away from high debt levels and unsightly expenses against earnings.
tops E says
Don’t listen to me. I am very foolish.
Sam says
Did Floyd May weather earn more net income than the entire UFC within the past 12 months? No EBITDA needed…

May I quote from another site – check out what Dana is quoted having said:
***
But why was he booked at UFC 175 on July 5, given these now obvious circumstances? Innocence…or its cousin, ignorance, depending on how you squint. White told Yahoo! that the UFC hadn’t really thought about the full consequences of a fighter like Sonnen weaning himself off of TRT.
“You know, nobody thought of that,” White told Kevin Iole. “There was never a f—ing plan put in place for these guys who were getting off of it. We were like, ‘Now they’re off it; let’s move on.’ But now it’s illegal. Now they’re off it but none of it was thought out very well.”
***
If a company that was looking at doing business with the UFC reads this quote, what would be worse – > if they thought that UFC management was actually that dumb and unorganized; or if they think that the CEO is absolutely lying?
I know, here nobody answers in the comments anyway.
The article: http://www.mmafighting.com/2014/6/11/5800488/with-chael-sonnen-all-that-fiction-leads-to-friction
Sam says
Extremely unprofessional and amateurish.
By the way, doesn’t the UFC have a deal in which their loans are predicated on a certain minimum amount of revenue is required to be generated by corporate sponsorship? I cannot see ANY legitimate sponsors being even remotely interested in the UFC at this point. Scam shell sponsors like Musclepharm & Xyience don’t count.
D says
Sampson is going crazy, he must have lost his meds which is why he is using 10 alias accounts. Haha.
BrainSmasher says
Lol agree D.
Michael, it is t a reflection on the UFC. There were guys who got TRT because their levels were slightly lower. Those guys would have no problem going off TRT depending how long they used TRT. But someone like Chael who had much lower levels would not be ok without TRT. It is understandable the UFC didn’t new the exact difference between each fighters medical condition. Especially since the commission create the situation. Surely they know what they are doing. Not surprised so ethi g like this got by the very busy UFC officials.
Sam says
Oink! 🙂
