Showtime and Golden Boy Promotions should be happy with the past two weeks as its promotion has produced good numbers on PPV and on Showtime.
Canelo Alvarez’s first time headlining a boxing PPV has produced “well over 350,000 buys” according to Showtime and Golden Boy Promotions. Alvarez stopped Alfredo Angulo in the 10th round of their fight March 8th. The 350,000 buys is a good number if you consider the Timothy Bradley-Juan Manuel Marquez fight last October produced 375,000 PPV buys.
This past Saturday night Showtime showed the replay of the Alvarez-Angulo fight as a lead-in to Danny Garcia versus Mauricio Herrera. The show peaked at 1.1 million viewers and averaged 972,000 viewers of its Showtime subscribers. The event was a 26% raise in viewership from Garcia’s last appearance on Showtime when he defeated Zab Judah in April 2013.

Payout Perspective:
According to ESPN, the PPV generated at least $20 million. This would be roughly based on the number of buys (350K) multiplied by $54.95, the HD price point for the fight. The PPV buys are a good indicator that Alvarez has bounced back from his loss to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in September and it did nothing to diminish his image as the most popular active boxer in Mexico. At only 23 years old, he has a bright future ahead of him.
As for the Garcia fight, a part of the rating might be attributed to those wanting to see the Alvarez fight. But, Garcia, who was also on the Mayweather undercard, is beginning to garner a following which may equate to a bump in viewership since his last time on the network. The Showtime fight also competed with UFC 171 Saturday night. So, despite the average viewership being below 1 million, it still did well for a card with Garcia as the feature.
Tops of says
Canelo would fight 3 times a year…good ppv for boxing this year
Diego says
I’m not sure Garcia’s recent efforts are going to catapult him into a PPV. He also looked bad in the late rounds against Zab. He keeps finding a way to win, but I’m just not sold on him.
saldathief says
Both fights sucked imo, but it defiantly tells us where these guys actually stand. look to see both dominating there next few fights with crappy opponents Canello will need a big name opponent to get a big ppv, over 500. Garcia needs to fight in PR or the NYC area and he will do decent gates. People forget that a good gate can make you money, everyone has gotten so greedy because of ppv.
Diego says
Getting the most money you can does not make you greedy, it makes you smart. Ideally fighters will maximize both gate and PPV, but the bigger upside is clearly in the PPV.
saldathief says
Really smart for who? Evander?Mike Tyson? the list is endless wait 10 years and tell me how it works for Manny and Floyd. No one is happy with a huge gate anymore, greed is not a good thing unless you are a scumbag. Exploiting every dime out everything is not healthy for anything or anyone just saying. More more more is not a good way to live a decent life or run a decent business. IMO
Diego says
That’s an absurd argument on several levels.
Re: Your point that greedy people are scumbags –
In your liberal rage against capitalism you apparently missed my point that wanting more money for a given amount of work does not make you greedy – it makes you smart. I’m not making a value judgement on the benefits of greed. I’m saying greed is irrelevant to this discussion.
Re: Your point that boxers end up broke –
Just because these guys wind up losing all their money does not mean that they would have been better off making less money in the first place. That’s ridiculous. Why would you leave money on the table? If you’re going to step into the ring and get punched in the face, why wouldn’t you try to make every dime possible?
Re: Your point that “exploiting” every dime is not healthy –
Exploiting every dime out of everything is called being efficient. Companies that do it, put companies that don’t out of business. Getting put out of business is much less healthy than exploiting every dime out of everything. Trust me on that.
Re: More and more is not a good way to live a decent life –
More and more may not be a way to live a decent life (it would depend on how you define decent), but for a given amount of work, the smart thing is to strive to get as high a return on your efforts as possible. It doesn’t mean working harder, it means working smarter. I get that working 120 hours a week is not healthy, but if you’re only going to work 50 hours, getting as much as you can for those hours is just smart. For boxers, that means being on PPV.

first I’m not a liberal , I am all about making money my point is and I guess It didn’t translate well, was that other things should come first.
Putting out a good product is more important than giving people overpriced crap.
Well since this is an MMA forum and boxing falls into it also, there is far too much crap and garbage out there. Promotors are blinded with making money and often sell us bs.
Giving the fans what they want is important! HMMM i guess people are satisfied with no Floyd/Manny fighting. Whats the main reason they are not fighting? Money! They don’t care about anything else, so the 2 best guys in the business , well at one time at least, won’t ever know who’s the best because of money disputes. Too bad!
For Christ sake the best pfp fighters name in “money” lol is he even the best?
The UFC is running into problems fallowing your way of thinking and so are thousands of business, look it up. Our prisons are full of greedy people who only care about a buck, ever hear of Madoff?
And if someone busts their ass for years getting their head knocked in, and ends up broke then whats the point?non of it meant anything.
If you think any boxing promotor or MMA promotor arnt greedy scumbags then you haven’t been around to know. Ive been around Boxing more and its defiantly the bottom of the food chain. And what I see Dana doing is no different.
And from what I see, compared to boxing MMA fighters are no different than a hooker on the street. So who’s benefiting here? A lot of shitty fights, guys going broke, big wigs making all the money, fighters have no say, fans have no say, spend spend spend more ppv ,more this more that. Wait till they tax the internet on us stay tuned for that! Personally I don’t waste my money on too many ppv ’s its not worth it. Most of the time the fights are garbage and I can watch all the boxing ones on HBO or showtime eventually. I just read in the NYC paper that 8 people from the finical business here have killed themselves, I guess when you’re whole life is more and more and when you can’t get any more or lose it life isn’t worth living so sad. Hold on I got to stop typing there is an obese fat slob in front of me how keeps eating more and more I’m sure he has a decent life, he can barley walk and he’s not that old.
Logical says
Being Canelo’s first time as a headliner i guess the numbers are decent, I honestly was expecting more, but if its true that showtime & GB were expecting between 300k – 400k figures then at least it meets expectations.
saldathief says
Sorry for the rant, but also how much does money and future possible ppv buys give us horrible decisions and early stoppages? Also money from gambling
Diego says
Nothing in that rant explains why it makes sense to make less money rather than more if you’re a fighter or a promoter.
Again it’s simple – businesses and people have an economic incentive to maximize their earnings for a given amount/type of work. Doing so makes sense. Not doing so does not make sense. That’s true whether you’re a boxer, an MMA fighter, a hooker on the street, or a high priced call-girl.
saldathief says
You dont get what I’m saying, its simple, when you get consumed with making money at all costs your sacrifice important aspects of business. What you’re saying makes sense on paper, it sounds like a school teacher with no actual business experience.
