This past Saturday’s Miguel Cotto versus Delvin Rodriguez fight on HBO scored the best ratings for HBO Boxing this year. It received 1.555 million viewers and eclipsed the Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. fight held just a week prior as the best for the year on the network.
HBO also showed Wladimir Klitschko as he defeated Alexander Povetkin on Saturday afternoon. The live show scored 534,000 viewers while the prime time replay scored 705,000 viewers for a total of 1.239 million. (via Dan Rafael tweet).
Additional numbers from the Cotto card had Cotto making $2 million for the fight while Delvin Rodriguez made 160,000. Undercard fighters Terrence Crawford made $200,000 while his opponent Andrey Klimov made $85,000 (via Dan Rafael tweet)
Payout Perspective:
The ratings are starting to ramp up but I’m not sure if that equates to a big number of buys for this Saturday’s PPV between Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley. We note that the HBO PPV is now $64.99 (in HD). What the ratings mean is that despite losses to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto is a draw and will likely be around for a while. As for the payouts, in comparison it gives evidence to those that argue that MMA fighters, especially those at the top of the card, are not paid their fair share.
BrainSmasher says
What evidence? 1 guy got paid well. The other guys are paid in the same ball park as the UFC guys in the same position. Coto is a top 5 paid boxer. I think the same position guy in the UFC makes in the same ball park. The guys at the top of every single card, even free tv, maybe what the other guys did.
Lets compare this with the Chael vs Shogun card.
Chael got a reported 150,000 but we know he got more than that.
Shogun 175,000
Overeem 285,000
Faber 120,000
McDonald 130,000
Brown 116,000
Browne 98,000
That’s 6 guys that made 100k+ on a single event on free tv. The event before that with reported salaries had 4 with 100K+ which was UFC on Fox. UFC 162 had 6 guys around the 100K mark or more. UFC 160 had 7 guys around 100K+

Where did the Zuffa dividend go?
duck says
“I think that Pacquiao – Rios will do 750,000-800,000 buys. I think this event (Bradley-Marquez) will do 350,000-450,000 buys. If this event does 350,000 it will be a very successful event.”
That was Bob Arum’s prediction, the Pacquiao fight is in China but will be on at the normal time (like UFC 144 in Japan) but it might hurt the the likes of ESPN promoting it during fight week.
Machiel Van says
For crying out loud Sampson, the dividends went into the owners’ pockets. No one is trying to hide this, and Standard and Poor’s have said as much for years.
A company saddling itself with debt so the owners can extract large dividends? Shocking! Definitely not like it happens all the time or anything. This isn’t some conspiracy, it’s just an indication that they may be looking to sell at some point down the road.

If Shogun had the same success in boxing he would be making millions on his show fee alone.
BrainSmasher says
I dont think so. His only success was in Pride and we all know thT means shit because it wasn’t even a real competition. In the UFC he had extremely mixed results. He got the belt through match making but has struggled since day. He is 5-6 in the UFC. All his wins but 2 were verses guys who were over the hill and retired soon after fighting. Forrest, Coleman, Liddell. That leaves Machida and Vera and we know Vera sucks. So he has 1 good win and a losing record. There is no boxer making millions with a 21-8 record.
Jack says
chael and shogun with their level of fame and popularity would be making at least cotto level money on their show fee if they were boxers.
Just look at terrance crawfords and delving rodriguez’ pay. hardcore boxing fans would have trouble remembering who these guys are. They are no where near the level of popularity or fame of these mma fighters yet they are earning in the same ballpark.
BrainSmasher says
You have no clue what Chael is even making. So you cant even speak on it intelligently. He just signed a contract before that fight. There is no way in hell it was for a flat rate of 100K. Like I said before. Shogun is a heartless bum. His level of fame is extremely low. He has a few hardcore fans. No one else cares about him. When he was in Pride few people outside of Japan watched Pride. When he left Pride and could be a star in the UFC. He failed. Even with the UFC doing their best to build him he still failed. 5-6 records with the way he lost his fights. Don’t make a person rich!

do you know what chael is making?
Saldathief says
So boxing does great numbers, too bad the heavyweight fight was a complete disgrace to sports, and we get the comparison of top UFC names to lower journey man boxers. No matter what the facts are UFC fan boys will always spin it. Its a complete waste of time even having an inelegant conversation on the subject of Boxing/MMA. Example Faber is one of the biggest names in MMA and his lack of fight purse is justified because some journey man boxer made the same amount on a big boxing card? utter foolishness and you aren’t convincing anyone not even the UFC fighters. Cotto lost the last few fights and still made more than all the UFC champs do in a year.
aintitthetruth says
Yup.If faber had similar success in boxing he would be makiing millions evert fight.its impossible to reason with these shills tho. they are unable to look at the situation of fighter pay objectively.
aintitthetruth says
Btw: faber and shogun were the highest ranked, and world champions. he was the ufc’s champ tooin case bs the stooge has forgotten. World champions get paid millions in boxing. they get 100000 if they are fortunate in mma.
BrainSmasher says
Faber peaked in the WEC. He has never been a draw in the UFC. Only you fools think he should earn huge money as a has been. I told all you fags in the past I don’t care what any of them make and wish they all made peanuts. You are the ones who want them to have money. Send them your money or stop bitching! You do not set the standards on what people should make. One pay structure has nothing to do with another. The UFC is structured different than boxing. Actually its not just the UFC is all of MMA. Every single promotion has been done the same way because it is required for the way MMA is set up. People go to a UFC event or a Bellator event. They don’t go to a particular fighters fight. To keep these promotions running it requires a different structure than that of a single fighters event.
In the real world those who do the work reap the rewards. The UFC created the demand, they promoted the fights, they put up the money, they discovered the fighters, built the fighters. They worked the PPV deals, the tv deals, and laid the entire ground work for the sport. The UFC deserves every penny they get.
BrainSmasher says
How many times did they have to fight and win before making those millions? Do they have 6 loses?
aintitthetruth says
Tl;dr. We are talking about world champions in their prime making less than a hundred g’s to show and win. that’s sad.who cares what their record is after the fact. shogun and faber in their hayday were the undisputed best in the world at their weight, and made peanuts. i can repeat it again if needed.
Jack says
I guess Brainsmasher did not want to answer my question
aintitthetruth says
Bs doesnt handle truth or logic well because he is a shill.
Random Dude says
Faber’s pay is truly pathetic. That guy has done so much and even carried an entire Zuffa MMA organization and still can’t get paid properly. Thank goodness he has his own business ventures, because UFC is never going to pay him properly.
As far as Faber’s current fighting ability, he seems far from being done. In fact, I think he should take another run at Aldo. Aldo is not looking as unbeatable as he did in the WEC and Faber seems to have gotten his old ferocious style back. I think in a rematch Faber could take Aldo. Remember too that Faber went the distance with Aldo the first time.
Keep shilling for the UFC BS, maybe they will promote you if you keep spitting all of that venom and contempt at the fighters over a pay discussion.
Saldathief says
Wow BS makes some sense, but you cant have it both ways . There is no money in MMA, MMA is structured for the promoter to make money and so is Boxing, and so is every other professional sport, fact is that all big MMA promotions are in the red financially, and will soon run into the same problems professional martial arts has run into since the 70’s, aka kick boxing. The UFC has gambled and its not working out the way they want. Exploiting athletes is nothing new, but when basically one organization controls a sport its bad for everyone. Zuffa’s greed and arrogance will doom them in the end .I am for free agent fighters fighting where ever they want and whomever they want, the sport would have a better expansion and would be more competitive and exciting.
