The Los Angeles Times had a feature story on local Southern California promoter Roy Englebrecht. The story highlights his career in the fight game and how things have changed with the sport of mixed martial arts.
After a career of promoting boxing fights, Englebrecht stumbled upon an MMA show in 2004 and realized that it was something that could grow. When he began adding MMA bouts to his boxing cards he liked the action and his audience did too. He noted that his first live MMA gate hit $54,000 whereas his typical boxing card reached an average of $42,000.
Englebrecht’s business has been mainly in California although there have been cards popping up in Washington state. Some may recall that Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions purchased his business and ran it for a couple years before he took it back over.
Payout Perspective:
The LA Times story is an interesting look how a promoter realized the limitations of the market and became a success. While there are tons of regional promotions across the country, some do not succeed because it wants to be the next Bellator or UFC. Englebrecht’s business model has capitalized on opportunities (e.g., MMA) while restricting its growth. Englebrecht had balked at iPPVs or renting out big arenas because he wanted his promotions to be top notch and make money. Outside of the Southland you may not know of Englebrecht’s business, but the Times story is a good weekend read.

I have said for years. That this is the way to be successful in MMA. There is only 1 UFC brand. It was the 800 lb gorilla even before Zuffa took over. There is no way to compete with it. But there is a regional market. I would say to never go national. But to many promotions forget it is a business and settle for moral victory. When a chance to get on TV arises they jump at it. Whether it is dumping huge sums of money in IPPV or online streams. Or taking very poor tv deals with major tv networks like IFL, Elite XC, and Strikeforce. Remember the UFC had always promised fans it would get a tv deal. Dana kept saying he had a big announcement coming up. I cant count how many times. But the right deal didn’t happen and the UFC passed on many offers. He realized these people in tv just want to make a quick buck and he didn’t let them kill MMA and the UFC to do it. More than likely you only get one chance and you cant jump at the first thing shiny.

No the MMA market is small….boxing market is huge worldwide….so there are plenty of promoters making money..top rank golden boy,Di Bella, duva, teiken Japan,Zanfer Mexico, universum,f.warren u.k.,Pr boxing promotions puerto Rico, songchai promotion Thailand, ala Philippines uppercut promo australia ab France ,branco s.africa and many more…giving more fighters fights every year..more promotions,,more fight purses….these promotions have been existing for years…making money….how many UFC promotions a year? Few…representing the world….really small
BrainSmasher says
The UFC isn’t the only promotion. There are thousands. And many are profitable. But you never hear of them because they don’t make stupid decisions to go national. Just as I have never heard of any of the promoters you listed in boxing except 3-4 of them. Of course they are making money. They screw fighters early in their careers. Some of the bottom guys are making a few hundred bucks a fight and fight every month. Those boxing promoters also don’t put anything into the sport. They just load up their pockets.
You being on this MMA site. Tells us all we need to know about boxing. It is in shambles and its own fans are not even interested in it. NO organization at all. No infrastructure. Boxing web sites suck and there is nothing going on in boxing worth talking about. There is only like 10 people who comment on these articles and disgruntled Boxing fans are 30% of them. And you want to come here and tell us how great boxing is while the fighters get rich and the fans get screwed making them rich. What a sheep you are.
aintitthetruth says
Fans get screwed? Mma,boxing and any sport should be about the athletes first. this isn’t sports entertainment a la wwf.
BrainSmasher says
AintUaSheep
In that case they should play for free. Just like I and many others do in the gym or kids do on neighborhood basketball courts. Lets them do it for free and us watch for free. Until then it is about giving the fans their monies worth. Only a fool like you would think it is more important for an athlete to get even more hundreds of thousands or millions. That worry about what is best for you. Have fun paying $75 to a guy who wouldn’t let you get within 100 feet of him. You send him your money like he is some tv evangelist and you are to stupid to think for yourself and warship the ground he walks on. I don’t live vicariously through them like you. I want quality entertainment and a sport worth watching.
Look at the gate of the Mayweather fight. Ticket prices 10 times higher than the UFC. Yet tv ratings show the UFC has more viewers and people interested. Boxing just has a few brainless fans like you who $2,000 for nose bleed seats. Maybe they write if off as their tithe and it counts as a donation.

B.s. is angry again
“thousands but you never hear of them”
…….lol…because its just a pigment of your imagination b.s..
…the partial list I gave are national promotions in boxing from diff countries…established for years and making money for figthters…I’ll give more lists per country….
Tops of says
Also there are structures in boxing WBC,ibf,WBA,wbo…they are governing bodies in which you start as 4,6.8,10,12 rounds….you will be first ranked nationally…then regionally nabf, opbf etc…and if u become a regional champ you enter the top 10 in the world then win fights you become 1 contender for the world….
In boxing you cannot be a Brock lesnar and fight for the championship in your first few fights…or can you talk your way for a title like sonnen or be denied a championship fight as a number 1 contender if you refuse dana to fight as a last minute replacement….UFC does have structure…….hahahahaha…
Tops of says
So anybody in the world can be ranked in the regional and have a chance to be a world champ…so it’s really a world champion….not a promotions champion..
BrainSmasher says
Of course that’s why boxers have to fabricate their records with stiffs. Being a “national” boxing promoter isn’t the same as a MMA promoter. How many of them have TV deals here in the US? How many fighters do they have signed. How many events they run, how many different regions do they run events in? Putting on fights for a guy or two doesn’t exactly put you on the same footing as an MMA promotion who is running tons of fighters in tons of cities every other weekend. I have seen some of what those boxing promoters call “events”. IF you call no talent and no fans an event. As for their profitability. You have no clue what they make or how they even make that money. Let me guess. You take a boxing promoters word for it. For all you know he is rigging fights. Not like boxing hasn’t done that before. In short. You are talking out your ass. Boxing sucks and MMA is better and that’s why you are here and crying about everything the UFC does. They have been kicking boxings ass and you are madder than hell and not going to take it anymore. HAHAHA
Even Floyd was kissing Dana Whites ass a while back. Telling him he is doing a great job with the UFC. What does that say? That’s says he is right. The UFC is kicking boxings ass. It also means he only talks shit about MMA and the UFC on Camera to piggyback the UFC’s success. Because Boxing isn’t strong enough to depend on itself.
BrainSmasher says
I will take a 2-1 Brock Lesnar over a 100-0 Peter McNealy. Yeah I know. You like to have frauds with padded records get title shot so you can over pay for them and feel all warm inside. However I like to see the better fighter get title shots. So I get what I pay for. I can actually see skill and ability. I don’t need a fake meaningless record to know is a fight is good or not. I do think it is important to earn your shot. But in Boxing. No one is earning anything. Just 100’s of guys looking for the biggest chump possible until they parlay that scam into a big money fight. Most get exposed and get rich doing it.
Tops of says
So much to say b.s. but as usual no basis.hahaha how many MMA promoters have tv deals in different countries and have national tv in those particular countries?
The sanctioning bodies in boxing determines the rankings….not one promoter lol….so you don’t destroy the credibility and integrity of the sport..
Imagine one guy Dana dictates everything who’s going to fight who…hahaha…and one guy says what the ppv numbers are…
Regional again b.s. is not decided by promoters in other countries it is under the said sanctioning bodies…example WBC is the world level it’s regional championship is the oriental boxing federation in Asia…..pacquiao had to go thru that regional belt and winning it…national champions per country like Japan,Thailand,Philippines,Indonesia all fight for that crown…and if you win your in the top 10 in the world…..
That’s why a lot of boxers represent different counties in the world stage….pacquiao Philippines,klitchko ukrain,cotto puerto Rico,Marquez Mexico,maidana Argentina,nishioka Japan,Frietas brazil,mywhter u.s.,haye u.k. Fasang 3k Thailand,chrismjohn Indonesia,Botha Africa, etc…..
Arum can’t say pacquiao with 3 fights as a 4rounder can say he could fight for the world championship lol…..
Check out some partial fight around the world in boxing…..

So there is structure in boxing….worldwide that is…the UFC is closer to your favorite wwe…one owner…names the belt world championship but a very few fighters from other countries participate….

Saw what you want. All the boxers beat cans to create a record. It doesn’t matter who over sees the title shots. Fact is each body ranks the fighters on their fights and record. And none of them fight anyone. So they are ranked on fraudulent records.
Our local top boxer was 10-0. All his wins except 1 were against guys with no wins. The one exception was a guy who was 5-0 with all his wins over guys with no wins. That is two frauds fighting each other. Our local guy won and went on to face one of the top Russian HW’s on Showtime and he lost. So the Russian again added a fraud to his resume making him a fraud also. That is all boxing is is a never ending circle of trying to fOol the public while avoiding other tough guys as long as possible if they fight at all. Even then you don’t know who is tought and who is a fake.
aintitthetruth says
Ufc has bums too. Why did they bring in elvis sinosic? So bisping and griffin could get easy wins. Oh yeah I have never bought a boxing ppv. And rarely buy a ufc pock. Mma will never be in the olympics as long as tools like bs think it should be about the fan. What have you done that makes you entitled? You sound like a petulant child.
Tops of says
Hahaha..b.s. talk so much b.s. then when you answer with facts he says…say what you want …..il post some more world boxing promotion fights….there are plenty of rooms for more boxing promoters because the pie is bigger…..
BrainSmasher says
MMA will never be in the Olympics. Because the Olympics are a joke. Even ifs version of boxing is even shittier than the real thing. MMA would never look like the real thing. As far as fans. Tell me again why Wrestling is getting the Ax? Oh that’s right. No one(fans) wants to watch it.
What. No comments on what I said about our local who fought Magomed Abdusalamov?
As for Elvis. He beat Jeremy Horn in his first UFC fight. Which is more than anything a boxer does inside their first 30 fights. At the time it was rumored the UFC signed him to a six fight deal before he fought Tito for the belt. Who knows if it is true. But it would explain why he got so many fights in the UFC.
Tops of says
Now brainsmasher is against the Olympics hahahahaha….
Dana’s 2007 interview
UFC President Dana White is confident that mixed martial arts (MMA) will one day become an Olympic event, according to an interview with The Oregonian.
Here’s a snip from White:
“That’s always been my goal, and it will happen. It will be awesome. I know there have been talks, but no one has approached me.”
He wants to,it’s his goal but nobody’s interested….nice pr spin b.s…..UFC is trying hard wannabe getting into the Olympics hahaha

Aintitthetruth says
Wrestling is on the upswing to get back in the Olympics for 2020. I believe that wrestling is getting the axe because the leader of the free world (USA) doesn’t teach its kids the international styles in highschool and college. That’s why you see national champs like Coleman and Askren placing 5th or whatever in the international styls. You have to join a USA wrestling club on your own time.
BrainSmasher says
What does Dana White have to do with anything I said? I said it wouldn’t be in the Olympics. Dana said he would like to see it happen but isn’t the one who is going to do it. You are also a liar. Dana isn’t trying to get in at all. He has said many times he isn’t doing it and is to bust to do it
“I’ve been the guy to say it should be an Olympic sport, and I hope I see it before I die, but I’m not going to be the guy to do it. I know what my goals are and what I need to do. That’s not one of them yet.”
Looks like I come out on tops of Tops again!
Tops of says
Hahaha….no .your argument is the olympics are a joke….your trying to degrade the Olympics…then I put out what Dana said that he wants to be in the Olympics..so he thinks highly of the Olympics…it’s his goal…..
Olympics is too big of a sporting event to be put down by a niche sport fan who is angry because the sport is not included lol…so his solution is to bash the Olympics…
aintitthetruth says
The olympics isn’t man enough for nascar or monster trucks! Thats why they don’t want mma.
