Notably, Tim Kennedy made $60,000 with a $30,000 win bonus for a total of $90,000 which is not what he stated in pre-fight interviews in which he said he would be making a reported $70,000 but taking home only $20,000.
Payout Perspective:
No surprises from the list. Silva was scheduled to make an additional $200K if he had not clowned around and beat Weidman. Brian Melancon and Kazuki Tokudume made the least amount on the fight roster ($8K) although Melancon picked up a win bonus for a total of $16K. Frankie Edgar made the second most on the night with $240K ($120K/$120K).

$48,000 INCLUDING bonus to beat the supposed best cage fighter of all-time? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
How much will Saul Alvarez get if he beats Floyd Mayweather? I hear about $10-$15 million.
Something is wrong with the cage fighting industry.
Diego says
Actually I think Canelo will get that even if he loses to Mayweather. Not bad for a nights work considering that his only tough fight before this was Trout and the rest of his record is fairly well padded with either washed up or smaller fighters. It’s a much harder road to the top in the UFC.
If I were an Olympic Champion in wrestling or judo and I knew I could make that kind of money in MMA, I would get a 9 to 5 job instead and save my brain cells for things like not getting CTE, not slurring my words and not developing Parkinson’s.
Sampson Simpson says
“Much Harder Road” depends on who you are.
Pacquiao had a murderer’s row.
Brock Lesnar not so much to the UFC title.
In both sports it all comes down to drawing. You don’t need to fight the tough battles if you can draw an audience.

Weidmans last fight was July of last year….so if e dosent fight again this year his income would be 4thousand a month for 2013….gross income that is……30 percent goes to Nevada tax…..is the listed amount is already deducted of tax nevada Jason?….if its not listed then he would make 2800 dollars gross…if he has managers and trainers then there would be more deduction……that is based on base pay listed above….
Jason Cruz says
Tops,
Before taxes
Jason Cruz says
John Morgan of Junkie tweeted that Weidman likely made 10 times the amount reported.

And an athletes profession has a short shelf life……that’s a UFC career for you hahaha…climb the mountain and when you reach the top guess what? You’ll still get paid peanuts
Tops of says
The big advantage of p4p boxer…is even when they get bored….the power of big money manages to make them motivated again….like pacman spends so much on his political career..that he still wants to get his fighting money…..and keeps him fighting….he could have retired after beating dela hoya….

Gonzaga is being cheated. His pay is sad to sum it up. Look at poor david mitchell. this was touted as one of the biggest cards ever ND he gets a measly ten k? way to go white. I would expect nothing less. And he had to fight a wrecking machine to get it is the worst part. Pierce is a monster.
aintitthetruth says
Gonzagas pay is less than those who haven’t even competed for a title. The ufc is sorta looking like a “what have you done for me lately” kind of company.
Tops of says
Thanks for the info Jason…I remember dealing with the Nevada commish and the check they give is automatic deduction already of the percent tax 30%( I think ) of the amount written in the contract….
Jason Cruz says
Tops: no prob
I am not sure how the bonuses are dealt with but since fighters are Independent Contractors I believe that they’d get the check before taxes and have to report themselves.
aintitthetruth says
What about lockerroom bonuses? I always assumed lockerroom bonuses were under the table. Off topic but then I remember when white told how much Fitch got in discretionary bonuses and wondered if the irs would have something to say about it. It’s too bad we have to use divination to estimate what mma fighters make.
BrainSmasher says
It is none of your business what they make. Go cry a river! Go ask the fighter what they make. They will tell you to fuck off. Just like I would do. Of course you would believe they ar epaid under the table. You are a tool. It is discretionary because it keeps everyone from knowing what others make. It slows inflation and keeps fighters from always wanting more than the guy they beat. So we don’t get constant hold outs or financial issue other sports have due to inflated expenses.
Fighters get what they are worth rather than what someone else is worth or thought they were worth. Because knowing will almost never get the fighter more money. The UFC will tell them to walk and have done so many times in the past. Pulver wanted more than Penn. Penn wanted more than Hughes. UFC stripped both of their belts and sent them packing. IMO rightfully so. Weidman beat Silva. But Silvas pay is based on a legacy and a popularity. Weidman shouldn’t get paid what Silva was just because he passed the tourch to him. HE has to earn it like Silva had to. MMA salary isn’t just based on performance. Fighters want to use that to get more money. But it isn’t soley what the UFC goes by nor should it.
aintitthetruth says
Penn left and made a killing overseas. Then you have bustamante jumping ship with the strap to pride. Yea, forgot about that one? Slipped your mind? pay isn’t determined by performance? That is contrary to things you/white have said about putting asses in seats. I guess you would want to have it both ways hour corporate apologist. If it were 1900 and we were in a coal mine you would welcome the 16 hour days six days a week…
BrainSmasher says
Busta did t ask for the salary of the guy he beat. He just wanted a lot of money and the UFC told him to fuck off. So no I didn’t forget anything. He also sit out a very long time and struggled. He had to come down on his price for even Pride to deal with him.
Penn didn’t make a lot over seas. He made good money for 1 fight and come crawling back. Pulver begged to get back in the UFC and they refused until he was washed up.
aintitthetruth says
Right. He made money in america/hawaii with his own promotion promoting himself.
aintitthetruth says
And he came back right into title contention
Then they based a tuf around him and a washed up pulver. Who was really desperate? The ufc to attempt to legitimize themselves after three champions walking away
BrainSmasher says
Why did they come back if they were doing so well? Zing! Penn and Pulver both shot themselves in the ass. You forget that Penn got his ass smashed twice when he comeback. The UFC did their best to make sure Pulver never won a fight. Even his lone win was because Swanson choked under pressure and dove for a takedown. HE was put in there to KO Pulver and he would have but wilted due to the Pulver name.
BJ Penn’s purse for his first fight with Hughes before holding out was 25K/25K. After his hold out when he comeback to the UFC his contract was still 25K/25K. He sure accomplished a lot lol. He got on the UFC bad side and got his ass kicked. While he killed his legacy as a 155 fighter. IF he didn’t change weights. HE would have been the best 155 fighter ever. With a resume to match Silva and GSP. BUt when he could have been on a run at 155. HE was getting beat in other divisions. Sure paid off for him. Not to mention what money he lost in legal fees try to sue the UFC during that time.

Penn won that fight with gsp. gsp and his face got beat up. Yet even with a bs (zing) decision they award him the title fight with hughes. Yeah he gases/ busts a rib but the ufc needed him more. It’s common knowledge that thenpenns are wealthy and don’t fight cuz they need to.
aintitthetruth says
Penn, along with leaner, was one of the few who was wealthy enough to just focus on fighting and excelled quickly, and became the p4p best at the time. Especially once pulverize lost to gomi, and penn beat gomi. Penn fought to enhance his legacy. Who cares about being the best 155er when he is one of the top Lily fighters ever. He is on a short list with couture and silva, fedor, maybe faber.
aintitthetruth says
Forgot dangerous dan. Shame on me.

P4p not lily. I’m on my wifes phone and I dontcatch every error.sorry! Lily is her sister haha.

http://www.mmajunkie.com/news/2013/07/brian-stann-on-retirement-its-time-its-time-now
Stann just retired. He’s a title contender and could make another run, but then with what he’s getting paid, why bother.
‘I’ve been hit in the head a long time and I don’t have any issues, but the time to stop is not when you start having the issues.’
– If he were earning millions it might be worth it.
“It helps that Stann has options.”
– If he were earning millions those options wouldn’t seem so great.
It’s a good article. He’s obviously a thoughtful and analytic guy and he’s weighed all the pros and cons, but if he were making more money, I feel that would outweigh all the cons.
aintitthetruth says
Stann has some good wins but is a fringe contender. Smart move he will make way more commentator. we need more commentators like him.
Diego says
If Stann were a boxer he would have some title or another (of the many) and would make substantially more than he’s making now. I view him a little bit like a Margarito. Good tough fighter, but is doomed to come up short against the very elite. Regardless, Margarito has a few 7 figure paydays under his belt, and Stann has a hard time seeing 6 figures.
