TUF 17 Episode 12: 1.09 million

April 11, 2013 by Jason Cruz 8 Comments

Television By Numbers reports that the season finale for TUF 17 scored a viewer average of 1.09M.  The finale ratings garnered a 0.6 share.

TUF 17 Season

TUF 17 Episode 1: 1.51 million

TUF 17 Episode 2: 1.27 million

TUF 17 Episode 3: 1.191 million

TUF 17 Episode 4: 1.25 million

TUF 17 Episode 5: 1.13 million

TUF 17 Episode 6: 1.14 million

TUF 17 Episode 7: 1.259 million

TUF 17 Episode 8: 1.12 million

TUF 17 Episode 9: 1.3 million

TUF 17 Episode 10: 1.03 million

TUF 17 Episode 11: 1.174 million

TUF 17 Episode 12:  1.09 million

The final episode included a visit by the four semifinalists, coaches and Dana White to the local Harley Davidson as part of the promo for the official sponsor.  The winner gets a customized Harley.  The TUF episode featured the semifinals with Kevin Gastelum and Uriah Hall emerging as the two finalists to compete for the TUF crown Saturday night. Hall has to be the most impressive fighter coming out of the season.

As an aside, the WWE Hall of Fame aired an hour later on the USA Network and received a 1.63 million viewer average.

Payout Perspective:

It was the best season for TUF on FX but slightly lower than the least watched TUF on Spike TV (Season 13 – 1.24M).  One has to think that the hype between Sonnen and Jones would have brought more viewers than a 1.21 million viewer average for the season.  There was much hype before the show and I would have expected a Rashad-Rampage like animosity which would have meant better viewership.  Yet, that didn’t happen and it seemed like they became friends throughout.  This may have cooled viewership as the season progressed.  The UFC/FX tried new production including a more “reality” feel with camera angles, interviews, etc.  Not sure if this was well-received or if the content was the issue.

Lower numbers than expected, I figured the season would do 1.5 mill.

Think Tues is the right day but I think 9pm doesnt work, it didnt work when they tried it on Spike either.

I’ve always thought 11pm following one of the two big FX shows Sons and Justified would have been best. I know FX likes to replay the series right after though.

If they aired at 11pm in teh fall following Sons of Anarchy which normally does like 5 million viewers you’d figure a few million would stick around and watch TUF after.

TUF 18 will be interesting, first female coaches and fighters, if they get Ronda/Tate the heat between them will provide drama. They have Josh Hill and Holdsworth trying out, both are in the top 4 BE Scouting report for BW prospects so you’d have two blue chip BW prospects.

Think the talent will be there this season, the hype will be there, heat between Ronda/Tate if Tate wins on Sat will provide drama, living in the house men/women will provide interesting drama. I think this season is gonna be big.

Question now is where do they air it? Does it stay on FX? FX isnt a sports/reality network, will it air on FS1? New network, would be good programming to have on the new network but I dont know.

I actually think Fox would be the best place for this season, even on say Friday night at 9 or 10pm you’d have to assume they would draw atleast 2 million even on a dead night like Friday. Thats where they should air it, would make Ronda a bigger star, give UFC a nice weekly presence on Fox and would fit in with Fox programming.

TUF ran its course. Quite impressive that it ran for 17 seasons, but no overhaul will fix it. UFC needs something new.

every season a new gimmick(next women coaches) designed to revive the show, every season a ratings disappointment. it’s over….
