Broner-DeMarco gets over 1M viewers

November 27, 2012 by Jason Cruz 10 Comments

Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports reports that HBO Boxing’s Adrien Broner v. Antonio DeMarco did a 2.6 rating with 1,050,791 viewers.  The lead in for the latest 24/7 for Pacquiao-Marquez IV did a 2.1 rating.

The 23 year old brash and bold Broner is reminiscent of a young Floyd Mayweather in attitude and style.  Broner’s last fight in July did 1.4 million viewers for an HBO Boxing After Dark.  DeMarco was a better opponent than Broner’s July opponent, yet the viewership probably decreased due to UFC 154.

As for the 24/7 series, its interesting that it received a decent rating considering the lack of buzz for the fourth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez.

Payout Perspective:

Despite those thinking that the viewer rating for Broner’s latest fight was low, it was on the same night as UFC 154.  According to Dana White at today’s telephone conference, he was pleased with the PPV buys for GSP’s return.  No word on numbers for UFC 154, but the Broner fight did well considering it went up against the UFC and college football.

Broner’s flash and talent make him a personality to watch in the coming years in the fight game.  I’m not sure there’s enough fighters in his weight class to make him a top draw in boxing but he is still very young and there’s time.

The fact that nobody has haerd anything about the PPV buys for UFC 154 makes me think it underperformed. If it was as hoped or better, we would have heard by now.
As for the Broner fight, I know that several guys that I used to watch UFC cards with whom opted to watch Broner instead. Don’t think UFC is recruiting boxing fans anymore, boxing seems to be taking them right back is my impression.

I agree Tim. Rumors have it that the PPV numbers are under 500,000. Doesnt bode allhat well for the biggest draw in UFC. Seems like most sensible folks that originally were into WWE and boxing went back to them.

A few imbeciles still follow UFC rabidly

About those UFC 154 PPV buy rate rumors…

PPV buy rate estimates take, at least, two weeks to come out.

    Better estimates take much longer.

LOL So now the guy who told us a while back that all the PPV numbers were fake is now quoting PPV numbers? I guess every comment section has to have its ass clown. Thanks Homer!

UFC 154 did 690k according to Meltzer with most of the numbers coming from Canada.

It doesn’t make sense, if less than 300k buys came from the US then that doesn’t seem like enough to damage Broner’s ratings. Hell, if I recall last time Broner fought Jon Jones was on the same night too.

I think the most likely reason is because last time Broner fought he had the Bradley vs Pac fight replay as a lead in which boosted his ratings up to 1.4. 1 million is probably his what he really draws without the lead in.

“Actually less than 400k is the word… Sad to see the fish drowning out of water”

Where exactly is that word from? Is there a media figure professing it?
